I basically do not submit Dimes to the grading services but I have one that I just may give a try on. If it will not go 66FB I see no sense in sending it in. What do you think on this thing. I will give one picture now and another later of the same coin but from a different angle that also may put a different opinion into your mind.

I am almost sure it wont 66, but it might go 65, the letters on the obverse are flat on the tips, the nose bridge is missing, and the letters on the reverse STATES OF are not fully struck (FLAT). As far as a nice coin, it is. In an overal opinion, I would give it a 65-. But you know me, its just an opinion.
I will say this, you may start your own business just taking pictures though, they really are getting top quality.


I did not mention the FB, I figured everyone knew that was a given, it is FB.

It's kinda hard to tell for sure from the photo but those kinda look like wheel marks on the obverse in front of liberty. I have had a few body bagged for that. It could just be reflection from the flip though. From here it looks like it would make 66FB on a good day.

If I had to guess, those darkish lines in front of Liberty's face are areas of die polish. A lot of the Mercs I see have those areas and when photographed, they tend to show up as dark lines. In person, they look like patches where the surface resembles a proof coin: it's very shiney with with no die-flow luster lines. Ken, is this guess correct? Also, for what it's worth, to me at least, it doesn't seem as if PCGS downgrades a Mercs much (if at all) because of die polish areas.

So Ken, when I look at your coin, it's definitely FB, but with some weakness in strike that is especially notable in the ATE of STATES. There are no big distracting hits that I see, and the coin has nice eye appeal..at least for those of us who like 'em bright and white. I'd guess no less than an MS65FB and perhaps an MS66FB. Of course, the usual caveats about grading from a scan apply.

Mark nailed this one. Here is the other shot I took of the Coin showing the Die Polish that is in quite a few places on the coin. The polish that bothers me is on her neck to the lower right as you look at the coin. No Hairlines or hits on this coin period. The Die Polish and letter weakness is somewhat distracting though. Coin came from a Original Roll and was Hand Picked about 15 years ago. White as White can be.

MS-64FB to a 65FB. Hard to tell with such a large blown up merc.

Anyway of making it about half the size?

Looks like a 65fb to me, but I don't get paid to grade coins either.

Here is a PCGS MS67 dime on Teletrade with polishing marks similar to Ken's coin. As I said, I don't think PCGS downgrades Mercs much or at all (?) because of these polishing marks.

These polishing marks generally appear in about the same locations, most commonly in front of Liberty's forehead. I presume that this polishing is the result of die clashes and that the die clashes often manifested themselves in front of Liberty, but does anyone know this for sure?
