A newbie question: what does "filler" mean?

I`ve seen this term a few times and don`t know what it means. I saw a Morgan Dollar recently at a local coin dealer with the word " filler " written on the filp and it was well worn. I didn`t buy it but, I still wonder what it meant.

It's a coin to fill the hole in the coin folder
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

It is a coin that normally would be of lesser quality than one would desire in their collection but is used to "fill" the space until a suitable coin can be acquired.

  • A coin used to fill in a hole(usually a tougher date or key or semi-key coin in a particular series) in your album or collection just to "fill the hole" basically, until a nicer specimen, or you have enough money to replace the coin with a more attractive one. Often applies to holed key or expensive coins also, or other badly damaged coins.

It is also a denomination of Hungarian coins. I just thought I'd give a darkside perspective.

  • As always, thanks for answering my question.
  • Spackle, Bondo, Wood Dough, etc..., used to fill in the hole for an expensive coin that you will never own! Fill in the hole, sand level, paint to matching color of album. No one will ever know the set is not complete!
