Marlins: Tentative six player trade with Rockies

The Marlins and Rockies agreed Wednesday to a tentative six-player trade. The deal would send pitcher Mike Hampton and outfielder Juan Pierre to Florida in exchange for catcher Charles Johnson, outfielder Preston Wilson, pitcher Vic Darensbourg, and infielder Pablo Ozuna. The hold up is that both Hampton and Johnson have no-trade clauses in their contracts and have until midday Saturday to decide whether to waive them. Hampton initially said he would block it, but is reportedly reconsidering.

  • Sounds like the Rockies are reducing payrolls; trading off Larry Walker to get Matt Williams, wanting to send Hampton and Pierre away for lesser (or at least lesser-known) players... either the Rockies are setting up for a blockbuster deal or they're hoping one will come their way image

  • Apparently Walkers contract is coming up soon, Pierre and Wilson are comparable, and Charles Johnson is becoming one of the best catchers in the NL, whos hitting should improve in mile high. Hampton was horrible last year and needs a change of pace, sounds like a good move for the Rockies.
