Hello.
I think I won a 1830 half dime from Heritage Exclusively Internet Auction closed last night. 1830
But, funny thing is when I checked their future auction previews, I found a coin whitch I believe is the same coin? link2
The second coin is to be auctioned at Orlando, FL next year....and what makes me really confused is the one I won is in MS64 holder and the other one from their future previews is in MS66 holder.
What has happened to this coin?
My guess is the owner thought the coin is overgraded and sent it to PCGS for regrade and came back as MS64 and then dumped it to Heritage sale.......any thought?

Very nice coin! I didn't realize you could get coins like that looking so nice for so cheap!
But please look carefully at the link2 again...there is a die crack on right field, too.
And I want you to look at the "mark" below PLURIBUS on reverse...I think it's the same coin.
While I do agree that they appear to be from the same die, I still don't believe they are the same coin. Yours may be a later die state, as the die cracks are more prominent. Yours also appears to be more sharply struck. (That may be the reason why the die cracks are more prominent.)
I think you got a very nice coin. My quick review of Logan and McClosky's great book Federal Half Dimes indicates that they are both from Obverse 5 and Rev M the LM -13 die marriage. If I am correct they say that this is a R-3.
The side to side pictures are a great way to compare coins.
The chance to review these has made me sad that the hobby lost one of the great Numismatists with the death of Russell Logan. I am also sorry I didn't buy one of the Russell Logan Coins at the Baltimore Auction last week. The passion and attention to detail of some of these great collectors in attributing 19th and 18th century coins leaves me in awe.
Enjoy!!!!
Placid has some good advice, check your "MY BIDS" section with Heritage, and you should see whether or not you won this coin. I also believe their is a "MY INVOICE" section available, and there should be an invoice available on line.
Nice to hear from you again sir.

I myself am hoping they are not the same coin, but I'm afraid they are( Thanks Placid I checked "my bids" and realized I'm the winner)
Trime- thanks for the attribution to these coins. I have no knowledge on variety of this series( I will study after I finish collecting them by date, but it will take a long time)
Darin,,,,,,,,,,HI If you always keep on serching toned coins, white coins sometimes look fresh to you.
The 2 coins are from the same die marriage and appear to be at about the same time in die crumbling and rusting . According to the reference stated earlier this is the 5th and final time the OBV 5 die was used; it was also the third time REV M was used. The diagnostic cracks and rust areas are peculiar to these dies at this time not necessarily to the specific coin. The light on the pictures are different. I suspect that the grade difference is in part due to hairlines in the field behind the head and probably in front of the face in the MS64. The surfaces are so reflective that it may have washed it out. You will see when the coin arrives. At any rate you bought the MS 64 and you are having trouble telling it from a MS66 holdered coin. Better that way than the opposite.
Do not wait to study the series until you have acquired a full set ( that is a daunting task). Buy the Mc Closkey and Logan book and even maybe Valentine books and study your coins as you acquire them. It will lift your appreciation for your collection to another level.
Masta Hanky,
How did you create the side by side images taken from the Heritage Site?

I just saved the images on Heritage's site to my machine, opened them in MS Paint, and did a bit of copying and pasting. Took all of two or three minutes.
Long time, no see (hisashiburi)!
