EVERYBODY'S FAVORITE...GUESS THE GRADE...1840 SLD...GRADE REVEALED

Here we go again folks. This is slabbed and we all know by whom. I disagree with the grade. If you can tell me what grade is on the holder and what holder I think it SHOULD be in, you won't win anything, but the satisfaction of being right. I know it's hard to tell from such a poor scan, but it makes the coin look better.

  • On a wear standpoint, id say its a AU50/3, but because of the chatter I bet its in a XF45 holder?

I would say that the holder say VF-30 and you think it should be a XF-45.

I'd go with KK on this. I don't like the colored spots (tape residue?) and they probably knocked it down a grade.
  • /agree with KK

Is that an ACG MS61 or MS62?

I don't think it could be in a PCGS or NGC looks cleaned/worked on.

ANACS would probably NET XF45 cleaned.

My guess - did you say the closest gets the satisfaction of getting the coin? since you disagree with the grade and all.image
  • Ths coin is in a PCGS slab.

The scan doesn't make the coin look bad at all. KK's right-- it may be as high as AU-53.

  • Okay folks. Here it is. There are such large patches of hairlines, I believe that it should have been "Holdered" in a bodybag.

because of the wear on the head, cheek, right arm, breast and shield I will say ef40.

There were some really harsh opinions about the coin, but I still stand behind KK's assessment.

i was guessing au-58 before i saw the digipic of the slab. now that you say it is cleaned (hairlined), au-53 seems appropriate! i find myself in agreement w/ pcgs. i bet 1/3 of seated dollars > au-50 are hairlined.

I was thinking around AU55-58. Slight wear on breast and leg, weak strike on head. As for the marks on the surface, I've seen more baggy one in AU58 holder.
  • Obviously cleaned and somewhat harshly so. I thought the reverse was a strong AU55-50. Obverse is ugly, say a VF30 given the gouges, stain on right field and sheild wear.

Actually there is little, if any wear on the shield. A good portion of the blurryness is due to the scanner. I agree with the harshly cleaned part, it certainly impairs what luster is left.

VF30??? Where did you get that from? #1 clue its not MS is the evident wear. #1 its a high grade circ, while wear on the legs, the legs still have that overall roundness to them. Other clues would be the amazing hair definition, liberty pole is CLEANLY & CLEARLY split, the pole infact still has a rounded shape to it, you can still see detail in the stars, her brooch is clearly seen, folds in the gown are WELL defined. The reverse? IMO, AU58/5.... LITE rub on left claws.
