Let's not get carried away. It's just a circ Peace Dollar. It's not like they are doing that to a BU 1893-S Morgan or something special.

I think if you soak the coin in acetone the stuff will come off.

I think the law is not to deface US currency with the intent to defraud. You can do anything you want to the currency or coins but doing something like changeing the 20's on a $20 bill to 100's to pass it off as a $100 bill is illegal.

On second thought that Peace Dollar is so ugly maybe it should be illegal.

I can't stand those painted coins either and something might take it off but the odds are it was a circulated or cleaned or otherwise cheap coin to begin with so it probably wouldn't be worth it. I seriously doubt anyone is cracking out PCGS MS-99 slabs to get Peace Dollars to paint and then sell (or not sell) for $18.

Without the paint, it probably would have languished in a dealer junk box until someone like me picked it up out of pity. :-)

It is ugly as sin though, isn't it.
