Very neat Cameo Mercury Dime

Cool coin on teletrade, I believe it is the only one for the date graded cameo by PCGS!

1940 10c PCGS PR65CAM

Wow, that is a great coin! Although after watching the AT video, I'm suspicious of everything now. :-)

Well, I'll be.....still haven't seen one of these in person though.

dad-gummed, if that ain't a beauty! i think the best proofs are the satin/matte finishes, but that merc/ is the nicest cameo'd coin i've seen in a while! seriously, what's it worth ?

Nice! I think I know whose it is (or was). Frost on the axe-blade is a trifle weak, but that's quibbling.

dorkkarl -- I'll say anywhere from $1500-$2500, depending on how many bidders want it, but it's been available for a while with no bites, evidently.

  • nwcs-are you referring to Robert Campbell's video on ATing?
  • Does the area at the adam's apple of liberty look like the frost was applied to the coin? Itlooks like it "ran" a little there.

The adams apple is just a milk spot...

That coin is so nice (and valuable)... I wouldn't have expected Teletrade to picture it! image

I truly think that cameo coinage from the 1936-1942 any denomination is tremendously undervalued...I mean I sold a 1939 Walker in PCGS 66CAM for a little over $5000 (pop 1, none higher) and a stupid 1950 Franklin (just kidding on the stupid) in PCGS 66CAM goes for 9 to 10 grand.

I think these coins are a good buy right now, there are just non existant in cameo so much so that there is not enough people willing to start collecting them...but when a few more peices get made and they look at them compared to the brilliant ones, the demand will rise.

  • Wow!

Mercs are so tough in cameo; especially with devices this frosted!

    Hey Morris
Find out who owns it if you want it. Jeff Werlin had this 1940 up on ebay link Click on my negative
pics. I usually compare the location of the dots and marks. Some areas look simular, others don't.
The lower pic is TT. I don't believe they're the same coin. Besides the times of Jeff's auction
and TT are too close for a cross. Also the TT coin looks toned.

Buy it now for $415? Excuse me while I beat my head against the wall for not looking at Mercs on eBay. That's a screaming buy.

The one on TT was a beauty and went for over 3K.

  • I looked at that 1940 cameo dime on teletrade last night. I just found this thread though. I can't believe it went for that much. I have a 1940 that has light cameo, about like the one 1942 in Leo's link. NGC gave it a PF67 but no cam. I got a great deal because it used to be a PCGS PF65. I could never pay that much just for a little bit more cameo.

Morris: I was talking to Strat about this recently: What's the total Cameo pop at PCGS for the 36-42 era? Including nickels, dimes, quarter and halves? Anyone else know...as I recall there was more than I orginally thought. For some reason I don't ever see any of these....

For the nickels, I am aware of two 1940 CAMs, one 1942 Type 1 CAM, two 1942-P CAMs, and one 1942-P DCAM.

I believe there is a '39 "reverse of 40" in 66CAM out there, too, but I don't see it on the reports (could be a number-prefix issue, since it is a "9" variety that also has an "8" CAM designation).

The DCAM is at the left, and Morris sold me one of the 40's.image

Nice going. You have a frosted proof coin with less then 12,000 minted, that you'll enjoy for a long time. I do the same with the Jeffs since I can't
afford the designated cams like Benny (BNE) can. An expert on the 1938 to 1942 proofs once told me not to refer to these proofs as cameo or light cameo proofs as the US mint's intentions then were to make frosted proofs and not cameo. Maybe someone here who has heard of this minting process can elaborate on this.

  • BNE,
I just received the coin this morning, and it is everybit the coin I expected, and more!
Becaue of the obverse being fairly mild in contrast, I can see why it didn't receive the Cameo designation, but the reverse is Cameo+ and the fields are liquid black with only one tiny, visible tick above the date.
I am very satisfied to own this coin, and I plan on putting it up with my lifetime keepers. image

Albanese had twin proof CAM Mercs at the Baltimore show (I think they were both 1939, NGC 66CAM). He was asking $2750.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Michael: Glad to know the coin was all you expected. The image looked super, especially the reverse, and Jeff knows his cameos. What a handsome coin! Congratulations!!

P.S. I would really love to get one of those really rare cameo Buffs, but the prices on those are huge. I keep hoping to run into one being sold by someone who doesn't realize its rarity. I can dream, can't I?image

A super deal on a terrific coin!

  • I ran into a guy with a PCGS Cameo Buffalo back at Long Beach. He said he had a Proof 67 Buffalo. I said I had one too. He pulled his out and his was cameo. Wow! He knew how much it was worth...
