  • They can't stomp me simply because I ride no jocks. The people who offended are the ones who worship the ground Kobe walks on... and hate to face the fact that he is overrated.
  • auto....kobe is simply overrated...but yet one of the top players in the league..can we agree?
    Lookin' to trade!!!! AIM- OCSTREETBALLIN04
  • I certainly don't ride anybody's jocks either... and to a point I think Kobe IS a bit overrated at least in the sense that many think he's without-a-doubt the best player in the game; I certainly don't think that but I wouldn't call him a slouch either image

  • << <i>auto....kobe is simply overrated...but yet one of the top players in the league..can we agree? >>

Agreed, but that's not saying too much because of how weak the NBA players have been overall for the last couple of years.
  • I happen to disagree Auto, personally I think the game is at it's best now....Look at early 90's....Kemp and Larry Johnson were good, playing now in there prime they'd be horse dung...There's alot of young talent, I think it makes Mike seeing himself (maybe not quit, but not too far away) in many players...Similar game to Kobe, although we all know Mike is better, or WAS better...Malone is old, and over the hill, but his zero points sure don't cut it...Size and Speed in the NBA is just better than in the past, same with NFL, baseball is similar, probably always will be, its not just an athletes game, involves more team play and brains, although pitching is the most important thing...NFL is the game where it's improving the most I have to admit, all these huge young guys, with running back speed, SCARY!!! Just my 2 cents about things...

  • JB I agree with most of what you said except the part that baseball is not a athletes game and does not require brains, and pitching is the most important part. Any sport that has more than two people is a team sport, and obviously you havnt played organized ball or you wouldnt say that. It takes alot of talent to hit a baseball where you want, do you really think that they just go up to the plate and swing to make contact? To know where to throw at any given time to which base takes not only control but understanding of the game. Try standing in the hot corner and have someone like Sosa, or Bonds sizzle a pitch straight at you and then tell me you dont have to be a athlete to play the game. One thing that we fail to recognize is that the older we get the easier the game looks, because we have watched so many come up through the ranks. Kobe is good but is he the best? That is a personal opinion, and I think not. Is he over rated? No. Is he over marketed? YES. People have always said that their fav. athlete is the best. Next year there will be someone new. Just food for thought.

  • You can take any player today and put them up against Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain, even Larry Bird and Magic in their prime, and the newbie would be put in his place. Kobe is just another Penny Hardaway, when he has Shaq he was great, but take away the big guy and he`s just another player. NBT
The only thing you can`t get rid of by losing it, is your temper!!! Heres an idea, if everyone would mind their own business we would all get along better!!!!
  • ya, "just another player" that happened to win player of the week this pat week

and i don't see anything wrong with having a favorite player or a favorite team and debating about them with people .. you guys seem to act like theres something wrong with that..thats part of whats great with sports, debating which team and what players you think are better

Player of the week among who? NBA overall is at it's weakest. Look what happened to the NBA players in the World Games. I know you are going to say... "The best players wasn't there". What players wasn't there? I bet you can count on 1 hand and have a finger or 2 left over. Back in the Dream Team One days, the best players were there and they still had a hard time trying to figure out who to fill the last 2 spots (so many great players to choose from).
  • Remember, the people who jumped on auto were idiots like nikobe and T1Mac, two little kids with no actual knowledge of basketball. I'm sure auto will recover image

  • Since i missed the intial discussion i will throw in my 2 cents. I think kobe is the second best player in the league (behind shaq) but i think he is the best overall player in the league (see the past 2 games). Does kobe have a lot of help when shaq is around? yes, but is kobe another penny hardaway? no. As far as the league being watered down i agree and disagree at the same time. There are less great players than when michael, magic, bird, ewing, olajuwon...etc were at their prime, but there are more good players now.

Best overall player? I doubt that. Overall, Jason Kidd is better. He is a consistant triple-double player and makes his team better. He's less exposed because he is with NJ.

And more good players now... I seriously double that. 1980's, you had Magic, Worthy, Bird, Ewing, Stockton, Malone, Reggie Miller, Olajuwon, Abdul-Jabbar, Pippin, Rodman, Drexler, Isiah Thomas, David Robinson (rookie season), Barkley, Chris Mullin, George Gervin, Dominique Wilkins, Joe Dumars, Bernard King, Julius "Dr. J" Erving, Kevin Johnson, etc.

All the players above were LEADERS, as in they made their team better. Players now are just scorers and not complete players. You notice now that there are never any more dominate rookies. I mean dominate as in Top 10 among NBA stats, not just among rookies. There are no more David Robinsons, Tim Duncans, Dikembe Mutombos, Larry Johnsons, Alonzo Mournings, Grant Hill, Jason Kidd, Glenn Robinson, etc. The last dominate rookie was in 98/99. It's been down hill ever since.

I would hardly put Pippen in that category of players. If you make a case of Kobe riding Shaq's coattails.. the even more obvious coat-tail riding is pippen grabbing onto MJ... what has pippen ever done without MJ??? Quit with seconds to go in a play off game? cry like a little baby in Houston about deferring to Olajuwon and Barkley? Or his list of many accomplishments in Portland? There is a good reason the Trail Blazers are trying to trade him to NY... Pippen isnt very good unless there is a superstar on his team.
  • whats jordan done without pippen is another question auto hides from.
Pippen atleast went to the western confrence finals with the blazers and he did lead the bulls to the same record and the playoffs without jordan the previous year with the chicago bulls.

yes he went to the western conf. finals with the blazers and the best cast of players money could buy... and when he got there.. he did not inspire or lead his team to victory.. he choked... the leader of the team choked.. and he did lead the bulls to the playoffs.. and without MJ... they lost.
  • Kobe is the Scottie Pippen of his time.............

He could never win an NBA Title with out Shaq ........................

Explain Pippin leading the Bulls to the Eastern Conference Finals (even though they loss) when Jordan was playing baseball. Do you honestly believe that Kobe could take the Lakers to the Western Conference Finals without Shaq?
  • I sure don't.

for the record... Horace Grant made the all-star team that year as well as BJ armstrong. Toni Kukoc made the all rookie team. So yes, playing with TWO other all-stars, Scottie Pippen made the playoffs compiling a 55-27 record finishing in SECOND place behind the Atlanta Hawks only to be eliminated in that compelling seven game series with the New York Knicks. He also led the team the next year to a near .500 record when MJ came back to play 17 or so games and got eliminated by the Orlando Magic who had some guy named Shaq. I am not even on the Kobe bandwagon on this one, I am merely setting fire to the Pippen wagon.. but since you brought it up.. take away Shaq and what other TWO players do you feel would have all-star caliber seasons? It would of course only be fair that Kobe have two allstars like Pippen did. If you would like.. you can read the same brief summary I am getting my information from at Bulls seasons in review
  • I gotta admit, I'm as shocked as anyone that BJ Armstrong made the all star team image

  • << <i>I gotta admit, I'm as shocked as anyone that BJ Armstrong made the all star team image >>

Most of that was because he was on the Bulls (exposure).. just like the Lakers are now.
  • mcdee2mcdee2 Posts: 1,150
so by your statement you feel Derek Fisher would be voted to the all star game ahead of Gary Payton, John Stockton, Steve Nash, Steve Francis, Tony Parker, Andre Miller , Stephon Marbury and Mike Bibby?? or you feel Rick Fox will be voted in at SF over Kevin Garnett, Peja, Jamison, Battier, Gasol, Rashard Lewis and Finley?? or that Robert Horry and/or Samaki Walker will be voted in at PF over Tim Duncan, Chris Weber, Rasheed, Dirk, Malone, Brand, or Marion??

They have had all that "exposure" the past 3 years and havent made it...

haha. now another excuse.. now it's the league that is week, thats the reason why he won the award.
auto, you crack me up.. i agree that kidd is a very good all-around player but i feel his shooting is too week to give him that title..he's barely a career 40% shooter at .403% and shoots less than that in the playoffs..

i also think the skill level of todays players is just as high or better than the dream team days but it's the intangibles that sets them apart .. i mean the heart and desire to win that guys like magic, bird and jordan had were incredible

i'll get this quote thing right one of these timesimage
  • This isn't Kobe's fault of course, but the NBA as a whole is so much weaker. 15 years ago, these Lakers would still be ringless. Teams like the 80's Lakers and Celtics were stacked, and teams like the Bucks and Mavericks (who won no titles) would be considered stacked by today's standards.
  • expansion will do that..happened to baseball as well..i think the european influence has really helped the nba in the last so many years..i always hear the argument that todays players only care about making nasty dunks and being on the highlight reels and have forgot about the fundamentals of the game..i believe thats probally true..but the skill level and athleticism of today is still pretty impressive
  • It's a balance...expansion watered down talent, but the Euro invasion is improving it a bit. I'd like to see some teams eliminated and the quality of teams therefore strengthened.
  • Do you honestly believe that Kobe could take the Lakers to the Western Conference Finals without Shaq? Once again that is a dumb argument. Of course kobe cant lead the lakers to the finals without shaq with this laker team. The lakers arent a deep team. Teams like sacramento, portland and dallas are too deep for a team with only one scorer to beat, the lakers need 50 from shaq and kobe to beat those teams. If he played in the eastern conference he could lead them to the finals if he had a center like motumbo or mourning who can get 18 and 10 a game. No team has ever been to the finals with only one star player, not jordan, not magic, not chaimberlain, not bird. So why does kobe have to lead a team to the finals by himself to be considered great when no one else ever has?

well put rooks... but Olajuwon kinda did it by himself when all he had was horry and a very young cassel... but you made a very good point.. typically teams need a trio of players.. two good scorers that can take over a game.. and an inside defensive force.. Isiah and Dumars had Laimbeer/rodman and Bird/Mchale had Parrish and Magic/Kareem had AC GReen and Jordan/Pippen had Grant and later Rodman...
  • and you can't forget the main fact is that pippen of the worlds played a good portion of there careers as a chicago bull. He played most and all his good years as a bull. It is unfair to judge pippen 10 years later on a whole diffrent team man.

Just like its unfair to judge jordan right now to his good years as a bull.

when pippen played for the Rockets and Trailblazers early on.. he was still in the prime of his career.. he obviously was in his prime when he failed to do much in the playoffs with MJ not around...
  • And how many titles did jordan win before his first title at age 29 and before pippen came aboard?

Pippin lead his team without Jordan to the Eastern Conference finals. mcdee2 said BJ Armstrong & Horace Grant were All-Stars, but neither one of them put up big numbers. Grant was more of a rebounder/defender. Armstrong was a clutch 3 point shooter.
