"air tite" plastic holders - opinions

NysotoNysoto Posts: 3,818 ✭✭✭✭✭
I store my best bust halves that are not slabbed in "air tite" plastic holders so when I fall asleep in the recliner and my coins fall out of my hands, through the cushions and into the springs they won't get scratched.

Has anyone had long term storage effects from these holders on untoned or lightly tone coins? Will the foam plastic on the edge affect the toning?

  • I use them for some of my Morgans, although I haven't had them for a long time. The company says the inserts are inert, so shouldn't impact toning. I like them because they're sturdy like other plastic holders, but no rattle/slippage (assuming you have the right size)

Inert won't impede toning, either. It just means it won't decompose into a blob and eat your coin like a hamburger. Intercept shields are the holders that will prevent toning by creating a seal around the coin that won't let toning agents through and will suck up some of the toning agents in there chemically to the lining of the holder.

Airtites - GOOD! Also, I believe they float (need to check this out), which means they are the perfect solution for that next trans-Atlantic sail, scuba trip to the Yucatan, or even the next ill-fated Titanic-like cruise. So, Airtites - Good, especially if they float. Must go conduct some scientific research - Archimedes Principle !!! image

More about the great mathematician Arcimedes:

At one time, Hiero, the king of Syracuse, ordered a gold crown and gave the goldsmith the exact amount of metal to make it. When Hiero received it, the crown had the correct weight but the monarch suspected that some silver had been used instead of the gold. Since he could not prove it, he brought the problem to Archimedes. One day while considering the question, "the wise one" entered his bathtub and recognized that the amount of water that overflowed the tub was proportional the amount of his body that was submerged. This observation is now known as Archimedes' Principle and gave him the means to solve the problem. He was so excited that he ran naked imageimage through the streets of Syracuse shouting "Eureka! eureka!" (I have found it!). The fraudulent goldsmith was brought to justice. image
  • The foam inserts make me really nervous. Sometimes I prefer the direct fit Airtites.

"Rings are produced from cross linked polyethylene (trade name "Volara"), which is totally inert. None of the components of these materials contain any PVC. "

  • I've had most of my coins in airtites for about 3 years now. No problems yet. So another vote for the AIRTITES. I DO NOT like direct fit holders cause they are NOT air tight and jiggle around. If you buy them from the right source, you can get them for about $.42 each.

You might try : Airtite Holders Inc.

This was from an invoice I had from 1996, so I don't know if all info is still current.

Air Tites are great. Buying all the different sizes can be a pain when working with world coins, but at least they're custom fit and can be displayed in albums, cases, or individual cards.

    Thanks VDB.

I see on their site you can buy them invidivually, but I'd like to buy some assorted sizes in bulk for a better price. I'll send them an email and see what the deal is.

I have a bunch of Silver Eagles and Ikes in Airtites with the foam rings included. They have been stored in them for about 10 years, and I've noticed only two Eagles have light golden and purple toning around the periphery. As it didn't happen to any others, even of the same year, I assume the toning effect started before they were placed in the Airtites.

I think the airtites are fine, and I agree with some of the others in that intercept shield has not yet been proven and are expensive. Just my 2c.

  • Nearly all of my coins are in airtite holders. They fit the coins very snugly and provide protection at a very reasonable price. The volara insert has yet to be proven as to what effect that have on coins. But, anyway, using them is more preferable then leaving them in flips IMHO.

    Airtite holders...an excellent product...

i put a few totally white silver proof rosies in them a few years ago...

they're still as white as the day i encapsulated themimage...i think the foam really is inert as claimed...

most of my circulated coins are in Airtites...what i do is cut the cardboard/felt holders down to about 2x2 size so they'll fit into a smaller slotted box than Airtite sells...

You can do a search on airtites on this site for more info.

My question is, how do you store these little round holders without getting them all scratched up.

Here is a post I wrote in a simular thread.

I want to buy 250 of the nickel size but wished they were the direct fit size as I have not been able to find some research or info on whether or not the white or black ring that's included in the airtite will cause the coins to tone. I have received coins in airtites and they were already toned but beautifully toned. But I'm not sure if the airtite rings caused the toning. I have a dozen coins in airtites now as I'm experimenting with them. I question the rings as sometimes I find them to feel somewhat sticky and they will stick to one side of the airtite after I remove the coin.

My original plan was to use the kointains for my coins but have been unsuccessful in putting the two little dinky round sides together let alone with a coin. My hopes were to place my raw FS Jeffersons in a Washington intercept shield album which has 188 openings for coins but first place them in some kind of small round coin holder like an airtite or kointain that would fit into the quarter size openings.

I'm tired of the flips and all the 2x2 boxes, keeping them organized. I want to be able to get the album out and if I wanted to have a closer look at a certain coin then all I would need to do is slid out the plastic window of the album page and easily take out the coin that is protected in a little small round coin capsule.

I think I could get eliminate 3-4 2x2 boxes of flips with coins and fit them all into one album. So the other thing to think about is what to do with the airtite holders after the coins are in them. They don't seem to have a box for quanity storage. The album that is offered holds only 36 airtites. They do suggest putting the airtites in a flip or a frame type 2x2 which is additional cost but then I might as well go with intercepts 2x2 box and holders but then I'll end up with more boxes then if I had just left them in the flips.

They offer an airtite holder coin chest which in my opinion is impractical. Takes up too much space up to hold so very few coins.
My other option is to create my own 3 ring album with the plastic pages but I'm leary about the material used in those coin pages and if I can get them where the openings will be big enough to house an airtite.

Why am I writing all this crap? I've had these ideas running around in my had for the last 6 months or so and I have yet to come up with a safe storage solution and I do want to include some of intercepts shields technology as my coins have shown some toning residing in those 2x2 boxes over the years.

My only option remains, having a custom fit holder made by the company who make the airtites.
Or any plastic company who can make me a holder simular to the airtite but without the questionable ring.

Recently, I've noticed that Silvertowne offers a triple row box where each row is 1 and a half inches wide (same size as the diameter of the nickel airtite but then I'm back to the cardboard box again.

A friend and veteran FS Jefferson collector has some 700 nickels in a couple 3 ring type binders, but each coin is in a stapled 2x2 and the coin pages contain PVC. But he claims that the mylar
plastic films in the 2x2's protect the coins, in the 18 years of collecting. I don't want to go that route as I don't like staples or PVC.

I'm still trying to figure out a way to store these round little bugers.

Not to be a wiseguy but there are over 45 threads that say something about airtites on this website. A lot of good info. Click on search, type in airtites in the "search phrase" box, change "title to body" to do a body search, scroll down a bit to click on "select all" then click "search" I was surprised by the numerous topics. This has got to help. Maybe I'll find the answer to my quest.

  • I haven't tried it, but I'm wondering if the air-tite would fit snugly into one of those multi-slot plastic pages like a lot of folks use for their 2x2s...a makeshift album.

I just ordered one of the albums from air-tite for a small collection of toned Morgans I have in air-tites. It is rather a bummer that you can't buy additional pages to add to the album...but I'm gonna give it a test drive anyhoo.
  • The best place to buy Airtite Holders is from Kim Potterfield. She buys bulk and sells assorted lot or any way you want to buy them. All holders are $ 0.32 cent each plus frt. I have purchased from her recently and is very responsive and accepts paypal. Give her a try, very reasonable..

The Morgan's also fit very nice in the Eagle album pages with the 2x2 foam adapters
