Is anybody else getting pop up messages?

stmanstman Posts: 11,352 ✭✭✭✭✭
Or do they just like me? Been getting quite a few in the past couple weeks. Even one from a girl, or so it says that got a web cam and she's cute. Thanks for any answers.

  • You may have some spyware or adware that got installed on your system with another program.

I use this program to sniff it out.

    AdAware

Edited to add: it is free software.

  • There are some virus websites that download a hidden ad window via HTML code. It is done to hide an ad window and provide revenue for that site. You better scan your system for viruses.

Thanks, I checked for viruses when I started getting these messages.
I don't keep it running as it seems to slow my computer down.
I have a dial up modem and it's a laptop that I use.

  • stman and a2labmom - If you both are referring to an Instant Message from someone not on your contact list, that is a different story. Those are messages sent by people on those instant messaging system to as many people registered on those systems by spammers. Sort of like when you get spam email from some unknown source that obtains your email address. In this case, you Yahoo ID is used to send you that message. I get those off and on.

  • Those are exactly what I am referring to. They are annoying, but I just X out of them when they come in.

Gemseeker, come to think of it you may be right. I have aol and I think they do say instant message. I'll look more closely next time. I don't use the instant message thing so maybe I can turn it off.

Yea I'm sure thats what I'm getting is the instant message.

This is great. Ask a question and get to the bottom of it with informed answers real quick. Probably saves me a lot of time wondering about it. Thanks, All

It might be a console message.

    Winxp/2k
    To turn off console messages:
    Start/Setttings/Control Panel
    "Administrative Tools"
    "Services"
Double click "Messager Service" and select "Disabled" for the startup option, and "Stop" button.

    They look like this.

  • Thanks for the info Placid. That looks like the exact same message I've been getting.

That Ad-Aware software works, it will find stealth advertisement programs on your computer.

Yes those work for programs that plant things on your pc.

The windows messenger ad's are not planted that way they are just spam sent to a wide range of ip addresses and if you are one of them you get a pop up message if you have windows messenger service running. One of the "features" of windows that people are exploiting.

    You can send them yourself.
to send a console message, goto a command prompt, and type:
    code:
    net send [RECIEVER] [MESSAGE]

where RECIEVER is either a computer name, eg: SERVER1, a username, eg: STEVE, an IP Address, eg: 192.168.4.3, or a resolvable DNS name, eg: billie.microsoft.com.

    and MESSAGE is your message
    example:
    code:
net send mybox3 could you please keep it down?

where the person at "mybox3" would recieve the message: "could you please keep it down?"

You can also send it from MMC:
    Start/Settings/Control Panel
    "Administrative Tools"
    "Computer Management"
Right click on "Computer Management (Local)"
    All Tasks/Send Console Message...

Then insert your message, and the recipients, and click send.

The messages won't be recieved if:
-firewalls at the recieving end block it
-they are running an os prior to win2k (w/o Winpopup running)
-you have the messaging service disabled, stopped or paused.

In addition to the other excellent comments in this thread, I would also recommend Panicware's PopUp Stopper program. Works great.

    Get it here.
