Cleaned Morgans

Can someone please explain how to tell if a morgan has been cleaned?
I am under the impression that if it has hair lines it has been cleaned.
Is that true or can someone clarify this for me.
I see this one on ebay and it makes me wonder

It looks pretty brutal to me. I would stay away from it. Just my opinion.

  • That's an interesting coin. I doubt that one has been cleaned...ANACS is usually pretty good about noticing cleaning and marking their slabs appropriately. However, it sure looks like it has been cleaned. I suspect it looks that way because the picture was overexposed (or the brightness turned up too far), really enhancing th hairlines and giving the coin an unnatural looking brightness to it.

However, you must remember that hairlines aren't always caused by cleaning. They can also be cause by die polishing and wear.

Aye aye aye! It has to be cleaned. Even die polish is not that noticable.

    Mastahanky,

Please expound on, ... you must remember that hairlines aren't always caused by cleaning. They can also be cause by die polishing and wear.

Hairlines and die polishing lines present as "opposites;" incused and raised respectively. How does wear cause hairlines; again, my understanding is they appear to be to separate entities, and one does not necessarily beget the other.

Even if it isn't cleaned, the eye appeal is horrendous, stay away!

  • "Death by chatter" comes to mind. Agree that the scan/pic is hard to tell without in-hand eyeballing. Taking that one out into the daylight to see it first hand kind of fills the soul with dread, doesn't it?

It just looks circulated to me. Probably in a pocket jostling around with keys, coins etc.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
  • ANACS would've net graded that coin noting it had been cleaned if they thought it was faulty - they're pretty good at detecting these things.
