  • I live in Tokyo, I've been to almost all the coin shops within a 20 mile radius and most of the flea markets. I've also the main Japanese coin book on coinage & currency. I haven't come across any of the coins you reference and I'm not aware of any $100 gold coins. I know the Japanese printed notes for the countries they occupied, and the US overprinted its currency in Hawaii should the Japanese invade, there are also coins minted by the countries that were under occupation, there are also US military notes that the GI's used while here after the war...but I'm not aware of any US minted coinage that was intended for use in Japan.
It's the "hunt" that makes this such a great hobby...
  • I hope someone comes back with some real info. I remember something about this, but just can't recall the specifics of when or what it was about.
There was some mintage of Japanese coins. Only remember, "WHAT ?" when this was on some TV documentary.
The $100 gold is from which country?

  • Bob: The $100 gold coins are from The US.What I forgot to mention, I believe he said the coins from Japan are different colors.I made plans to see them sometime this week.

  • TThe US Mint has never produced coins or planchets for Japan. Information is from the Coin World Almanac.

The only $100 US coins are made of platinum not gold. You really need to look at the $100 coins. I have seen a lot of people with gold colored Mexican 100 peso coins who think they are hundred dollar coins because they have $100 on them.

I've never heard of any gold coins minted in the US for Japan. I'm interested in finding out just what the coins are, though.

Please post scans if you can have some made.

The only gold coins I'm aware of minted for a foreign "government" are Saudi.
Doesn't seem likely this is it though.

I think you are thinking of the coins the US Mint struck for the Phillipine Islands. I would also bet the $100 coins you are thinking of are the Canadian Commems that are 1/2 oz of gold and I think started being struck about 1977.

Once you see the coins you'll have a better idea.
