Your opinion on the grade of this Coumbian half (big scan)

My scanner strips the image of all luster, but use your imagination to see that it has lots of luster under medium toning.

I don't have many commemoratives, so I'd appreciate your opinions on the grade. I figure it's MS-63.

Looks au in the scan but scans don't always pick up details. I usually look at the ribs of the sails on those.
If it is ms I would guess 62-63.

Are the slabbers going to attribute "FRS" (Full Rib Sails) from now on? image

You can see all the ribs if you tilt the coin a bit.

AU55. Columbus looks to have solid wear on his hair.

I would call it XF-45 doesn't look like it has much luster by the scan but if it does I'd go a grade higher.

If the luster is there like you say it is Shiro, than the coin will probably grade 63.

The scan really makes this coin look AU with definite wear on the obverse and a little less on the reverse.

If it is not wear then 63 would fit.

Looks like there is light wear on the high points so I'd say AU 55. If thats not wear it might go 62.
  • The Lat. and Long. lines look good. I'd say 62 - 63. Twowood

shiro- looks au55-58 from the scan. Looks like wear on the high points on the obverse although that could be contributed to a weak strike as these are known for flat hair detail. I played with the brightness on my end and it does appear to have wear . mike
