What's this weird 1999-P quarter worth?

1999-P error
Just wondering. And what causes something like that--a big glob of grease or something? The reeding on the quarter is crisp. Thanks for any help!

  • Looks like what they refer to as a die cap error - Here is the reference from the lingo section:

    capped die
The term applied to an error in which a coin gets jammed in the coining press and remains for successive strikes, eventually forming a “cap” either on the upper or lower die. These are sometimes spectacular with the “cap” often many times taller than a normal coin.

  • That dosent look like a die cap to me it looks more like a adjustment to the pressure to the coining press or a major strike throught (greese )

A die cap has a shallow dished out look to it this dosent look like it has that .

My best guess would be they were adjusting the pressure on the press and this was one of the attempts.

If it was a pressure adjustment then why would some letters be completely missing? I think your guess of a strike through with a grease filled die may be a better explanation.

Looks like a strike through to me too.

    For worth, right now $9.05
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

  • That is not a struck through a cap or a die adjustment. It is simply struck through grease.
Notice how well and high struck the rims are. Die adjustment, or weak strikes as they should be called because we don't know why they are weakly struck, coins will not have well struck rims. A look at the back side of this coin would show a well struck reverse, unless it has grease too.

  • I have a Washington quarter that looks similar except the details are missing near the rim on the obverse. May not be worth much but looks pretty cool though.

    Struck-thru grease.

Simple grease strikes with a letter or two missing have sold on eBay for about $5-$10.

Major detail missing has sold around $25.

I think the combination of major detail missing, the coin is the 1st in the series, and it looks in good condition, I would expect the coin to sell at around $40.

    Struck through grease.
If it was anything else there would be other indications.
It's a nice one though- as far as these go.
    Neat coin.

Take another look at the auction to see if it's for sale.
