1878 S Morgan Variety

I have a 1878 S with a small S mintmark. I compared it to another 1878 S and the mintmark was definitely smaller. I was wondering does the 1878 S has a VAM with a small S. I did check the vamlink.com site but did not see any listing for the 1878 S. Are there any VAM experts out there? Thanksimage

  • I just looked in my Top 100 Vam Keys and only found a 'Long Arrow Shaft' variety for that date.Maybe you've found a new die variety.I don't own the main Peace and Morgan dollar encyclopedia.but maybe someone here does and can be of more help.

According to the VAM link website the 78-S used the "square micro S" MM so it may be that the bigger MM may be the oddity...

Well, the '78-S is SUPPOSED to have a small square "S" mintmark. You should have snatched up the larger one; that would have been the rarity. I am unable to find any documentation regarding any other mintmark on the '78; if your coin is OTHER THAN a small square "S", then you should have it looked at.

I'll second Gill the Vam Man as the Type III square S was the only MM on the 78. You probably have a chipped die or some kind of RPM or MM variety but with over 50 different VAM # for the 78-S without a pict I really can't offer more info.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
