Seller the "reedededge" experiences? Practices?

Anyone ever deal with this guy?

No matter what the auction it reads like, "although in a XF40 holder, this beauty will end up in a MS67DCAM". If this guy thinks a coin is that under graded why not submit it himself?!!

Frankly, I avoid such sellers but he has one or two items I want to bid on. Is he all hype and no substance or has anyone purchased decent material?

This link is a perfect example. He uses the same lines after every major show boosting how many gazillions of $$$ he has purchased.

I have bought two coins from him. He does tend to offer high for the grade stuff in my opinion. You can bargain a little but not much (maybe 10%). One coin I bought from him was graded AU58 and now is in an MS62 holder. There is an artform to identifying high for the grade material and this guy seems to be the real deal.

once you get on his contact list, he'll spam you to no end. their coins arent' so great as to make it worth the irritation, imo.

He does not state that the coin will upgrade to a 63 in that auction. He says that it "looks like a 63". Big difference.

Purchase a hyped up IHC from him 6 weeks ago, and you know what, it deserved to be hyped up. So far I haven't received any "spam" from him.
  • Rob is a real talent. He knows his Dollars as well as anyone. If he says its a shot, I'd believe it. And I can also factually state he pays up for the PQ stuff.

    Laura,
Was it Rob that bought the 1804 dollar that was up for auction earlier this year?
  • Nope. Kagin and Martin Paul bought my old coin. (the Amon Carter piece).

    Laura,
Ok, I know he bought a fairly major rarity this year. What was it?
  • He paid $115,000.00 for the 1794 $1 from the Chicago B+M sale.

Now that was a really nice coin (and NOT REPAIRED or retoned). Got that Bustman?

I've had a number of dealer-to-dealer transactions with Rob and have always been pleased with the result. I did return one coin I bought through ebay and while it took some time to get my refund, I did get it.

Hey, your a talented numismatist and funny, how 'bout that!
  • I just purchased a 1874S Seated Liberty Quarter W/Arrows and liked the coin.

BUT read his auction policy close. He plainly states their are NO RETURNS for coins purchased through auction. The one I bought cost enough I requested he offer a return priviledge and he was kind enough to give me one. So if their is any doubt about the coin ask for a return priviledge on it before you buy it.

  • I have known and dealt with Rob for over ten years. He has a great reputation for knowledge and expertise in the rare coin market.I was always happy to pay a little more for one of his coins because over the years every single coin was resold for a nice profit. When he hypes a coin pay attention as it will usually turn out to be as good or better than described.

  • I have known Rob Lehman for about 20 years since he used to deal coins out of his townhouse in Woodbridge, Va. He would go to shows, and bring back super stuff and allow us to cherrypick the cream of the crop. He had, and probably still does have a great a eye for premium material and the majority of us who purchased from him have done very well regardless of all the huff, and fluff.

ok, HERE is a sample spam (cleaned up for formatting) that i received from reedededge guy recently. i get em whether i want em or not! & no, i was NOT asked if by them if i wanted to get spammed....

look at how often he uses the dreaded "PQ".

    here it is:
    CERTIFIED U.S. COIN INVENTORY

Below, you will find a sampling of our certified, U.S. coin inventory. Most items have been “net” priced, although there may be a little room on specific coins. In other words, if you have an interest in something on this list, please make an offer. The worst that we can say is, “no”.

ALSO….This is NOT just another coin list. Unlike most lists that you get via email, fax and snail mail, this list features high-resolution images of EACH AND EVERY ITEM! That’s right; simply click on the coin(s) that you are interested in, and you will be transported to a web page that has a detailed description of the coin along with at least 3 enlarged images. This is, after all, the 21st century, and our list reflects today’s available technology.

Thanks for looking, and we hope to hear from you soon!

He once had an MS64 (PCGS) 1861 Seated Dollar in an ebay auction that caught my eye. I happened at a later show to see the coin in his case as I was browsing the floor and asked to see it. It was very high end and much nicer than the scan.

    That's my only experience.

I've had very good experiences dealing with Rob on both the buy and sell side. He very knowledgeable about a wide variety of seies, and he has a very good eye for quality, especially in toned material. He is willing to pay a premium for PQ coins. He is gracious and friendly, especially to people he knows or who he has dealt with.

He is also a tough sort of guy. You would be best advised to read his auction terms closely before bidding, as he follows those rules rather strictly. Also, he is far from an E-bay only seller, and so many of his best pieces do not necessarily find their way to online auctions. Overall, I like him a and like dealing with him. He is a straight shooter and you can trust his word.
  • I bought one coin from Rob. It was an 1803 Draped Bust Large Cent. It was PCGS Au55. I paid all the money I believe, but I got a super coin with super surfaces and color. I have not seen a nicer of the type at any grade. I was also able to put it on layaway which allowed me to do it. I have to say even though I paid a lot for it, I am glad I bought this one over others at much less $$. It is truely my favorite coin..image

I have had very limited experience with Reeded Edge. Unfortunately, they've all been highly negative. The coins he tried to hawk were marked as ``PQ, can't understand why not graded higher''.

One coin stood out: a '75-S Trade Dollar, graded MS64 by NGC. It was described as stated above, but in reality the coin was very clean but lifeless, unoriginal and had grossly muted luster. ANd, the they wanted very close to 65 money.

If he could read my thoughts at the time...

I have found that this practice of theirs is typical for them. I will not lightly do business with them. Anyone who tries to *hawk* overgraded product coins at premium prices are undeserving of my patronage.

    EVP

PS Please keep in mind that my experiences with them are limited.

How does one get a hater to stop hating?

I can be reached at evillageprowler@gmail.com

  • Thanks for all the feedback guys.

Maybe if more dealers realized the high end buyers do not like hype they would tone down their message? Afterall it can lead to major disappointment.

  • The PCGS MS65RD 1892 Indian Head Cent that dorkkarl lists above was recently on ebay. It was described as PQ66? The image was decent and it showed a very large carbon spot on the obverse between the third and fourth diamonds. There was a small but very noticeable gash on the cheek near the mouth. The color looked like it was leaning towards an RB. The coin didn't belong in a 65 holder, never mind a 66? I sent a question to the seller asking about these problems [just for kicks]. He never responded and the coin only went to about $250, never coming close the reserve. Looks like this is one that he will have to sell mail order to get anywhere near his asking price of $1100.

toothpuller, I remember you and me talking about that 92, it was a real dog. If anyone thinks a dealer should be the final judge of the coins you buy, well all I can say is good luck. And Karl if you don't want his email for goodness sake learn how to block email or do you like to make life difficult on yourselfimage?

hey irishmike, i know how to block email, etc etc! the point is though that i like it when dealers show their true colors. i get tons of spam from "cameo-cc" as well, & it's always good for a laugh. luckily, i don't use my "real" email account for this kind of drivel. image
