Many of us recommend that new collectors (and even old ones!) get some reference books. One of my favorites is this one - The Comprehensive Catalog & Encyclopedia of U. S. Coins that was published by Coin World in 1998. The link above is offering the book for $7.89 - a great deal.
If you can live with the fact that the prices are obviously out of date, the reference material alone is worth the money. It has much more information than the Red Book.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

It is annoying, though, that they require registration. I'm already buried in spam every day. I couldn't find anywhere to tell them to remove me from their lists. Anybody see how to do that on their site?

Might have interesting stuff for helping my 10yr old aspiring golfer get through the next (and most tumultuous) decade in his young life!! Might help me get through it in one piece also!
Nice cheap site for books BTW! Thanks for posting.

What did the doe say when she came out of the woods?.....Last time I do THAT for a buck!
I have the Red Book, and I've seen Breen's Encyclopedia; but I've never seen this book on ebay or anywhere else. Looks like a great reference book.
