IS A 1955s LINCOLN CENT WORTH $6,325 TO YOU?

A 1955s Lincoln Cent in MS68RD is up for bid on Thursday afternoon at the Heritage Long Beach Auction. The fact that the internet part of the auction produced a $6k+ opening bid is testimony to the fact that people will buy the plastic. In this case they are also buying a beautiful coin, BUT, I'd guess that with over 44 million of this variety minted and many of them saved in rolls back in 1955, other just as beautiful examples exist in collections today. I have my 1955s sitting in a Capital holder and looking very nice to me. It cost me 75 cents when I purchased it from Jakes in Chicago back in 1985. I think Jakes would sell one today for about the same price. Anyway, what do you think. Is a 1955s Lincoln Cent worth $6,325 to you? Or, would you pay that much money to get one certified MS68RD from PCGS? Steve

Buy a nice PCGS MS-67 for 40.00 use the rest of the cash to buy a 1909-S VBD MS-66! image

    Spooly,

I'm still in need of a 55-S...who is selling them for $40 these days? I know that by the end of a certain dealer's pet project they might be as common as the 45-S but they sure sure aren't there quite yet, and the 45-S is the only PCGS MS67RD Wheat cent that I know of right now that you can get for $40.

As for the coin in question...words that I never want to hear used to describe any high-grade red Lincoln I ever own..."A swirl of powder-blue color on the reverse at the denomination ONE CENT further confirms the originality of this gorgeous example". 'Nuff said!

I'll take the 55-S in MS66RD and buy a dozen or two $200 to $500 type coins!

well i see lincolns are popular and this coin is a pop one coin! and a pcgs 68 red to boot!! i have not seen the coin myself and i really know little to nothing of rarity and how these coins 55s coins should look. with the current collecting community actively needing this coin i can see where it would have a bid like this

would you rather have the 55s in the auction

OR and you have ONE choice of the coins i posted on here

monster toned 1936 satin proof ngc67 buff
    ngc ms67 1889 lib nick
pcgs proof65 deep cameo 1910 barber quarter
ngc proof64 1881 ultra cameo trade dollar blast white
ngc proof65 ultra cameo 1871 three cent nickel blast white

no right or wrong answer which one do you choose? the 55s over any of the above coins? or one of the above coins?

now the same question but after you choose your coin it must then be broken out of the holder and resubmitted raw to pcgs or ngc?

    sincerely michael

None of the coins you mention michael...unless the liberty nickel is MS67 by PCGS standards of today. I would however rather have a 1909-S VDB in MS66RD, OR a PQ 1926-S in MS64RD, OR a 1919 in MS68RD, OR PQ 1931-D and 1931-S in MS66RD, OR 1934-D, 1935-S and 1936-S in MS67RD (not sure if this will go for that much money though...) all from the same series.

RELLA is right the price for a 1955-S is $195.00. (David Hall has one)

Then you can probably find one for $100 if he is selling one for $195.

I wouldn't pay 6K for this coin. However, the demand is there. There has to be at least two people who will pay near that for it.

Yes I forgot to mention that the $195 DHRC is asking is a "what cheap brand of cut-rate crack were they smoking" price. I have a KILLER one in hand right now for $150 but it is still more expensive than it should be so it is going back...about $100-$130 is the right range for this coin in MS67RD today.

    I'd buy a NICE
    09s
    SVDB
    14d
    17/17
    22 Plain
    31s
    44 d/s
    55/55
    72/72
    83/83
    84/84

and I think I could get some Very nice examples of all of these for over 6K total!
