How can you read the ID number on Holder PCGS

I have a 1914 Barber Dime that was graded by PCGS with the numbers 4865.64/01367015. This coin had been in the older type holder and was sent in for upgrade last month.Please help!I would like to learn how to tell the date these coins were graded year, etc. Thanks,Snakeimage

    See this thread on the Q&A forum Link to Rick's answer on cert numbers.

    Additionally, the 4865 is the coin nummber for a 1914 Barber dime and the 64 is the grade (1914 Barber dime in MS64; very nice).

    RMs clarification that the assigned coin numbers were random surprised me a lot. There had been lots of discussion in the past on this forum on the secret process.

  • You are telling me there is no way to determine the date the coin was graded and the number are just there for no reason except a computer put them down for the grader.I'm sorry but I can't understand that.I woulds like to know what the numbers stand for?I am not thying to be a smart A--- I just want to know what the numbers respersent.Thanks,Snake image

    When Carol re-opens the Q&A Forum, you might try asking Rick if there is any way to estimate when the coin was slabbed. Additionally, if you have a pictue of the original slab, Conder might be able to help you.

    4865 = 1914 Barber Dime
    64 = Grade
    01367015 = Serial number

    Serial numbers are sequential within an invoice, but the starting number is apparently selected by random (see Rick's post).

    However, until recently, I believe all serial numbers were 7 digits, not including the leading zero. Leading zeros were printed on older slabs, but starting with the blue labels (I think) they were removed, though they are always encoded in the bar code (if any).

    8 digit serial numbers began being used maybe a year ago(?) as they apparently ran out of 7 digit numbers.

    Other than that, I know of no way to date a coin by the serial number.

    I suspect PCGS does retain the original certification date and submitter in their database in case of legal issues. But if you're just curious, you're probably outta luck.
  • Snake,

    As Steve27 said, if you cand describe the slab well enough for me to determine which variety slab you have I can give you a rough estimate of when it was slabbed.

    I suspect that PCGS made the numbers random to help with its myth (?) that grading standards do not change. In particular, PCGS surely does not want people paying a higher price for certain certification numbers because grading was perceived to be tighter during the period the certification number was used.

    I remember a thread that talked about the prefix telling you it was a walk-through, i.e.
    xxxxx.69/2144455; the 21 means it was walked thru at a show. But then again, I can't remember what I had for breakfast.... I have to think their database can tell you when it was graded if they want you to know.

    PhillyJoe, I'm not sure if you were just using 21 as an example or that is the code you heard, but 21 is NOT a code for walk-thru. I have several coins that start with 21 and I submitted them. They were not the walk-thru service.
