let's settle this.....who's the g.o.a.t of basketball and why?

I don't want newbie air jordan rocking freaks to post there biased opinions. If you say mj say why and what did he do better than the next legend or stay the heck out of this convo.

I will say wilt chamberlain and this is why:

Wilt owns 56 regular season records, Jordan only 4; Wilt owns 7 scoring titles, MJ 10.... Wilt has 119 50+ point games, MJ only 30; Wilt led the league in assists, fg%,minutes and rebounds 29 times, MJ 0. Wilt dominated the game like no other. His first year in the league he set rebouding and scoring records that NO other player has broken. In the 1961-62 season he avg. 50.4 ppg. Wilt won seven scoring titles, 11 rebounding titles, and led the league in minutes played 8 times. He averaged over 45 minutes per game every game of his career. In 1967-68 he led the league in assists – something Jordan has never came close to doing. Chamberlain holds the records for points scored in a season and a game (100), rebounds in a game (55), season, and career., as well as minutes played in a season (he averaged 48.5 min/game in 1961-62), and field goal percentage in a season (72.7%). Jordan supports try to attribute this to his hight but, cannot explain why Jabbar could not equal these feats despite being taller. Taller players like Shawn Bradley, Rik Smits, Gheorge Muresan or or Maute Bol never have come close.Jordan-supporters know that Jordan’s feats cannot match up to Chamberlains. They point to their career scoring averages, yet cannot explain why Chamberlain has 119 games with 50+ points, to Jordan’s 30. Furthermore, while they chalk up Wilt's rebounding dominance to his height advantage, they cannot explain why he led the league in assists, and Jordan could not.

put wilt chamberlain on the 90's bulls and you still got a dyNASTY!

  • I say why bother to make comparisons? It's Wilt in the 60s vs. Jordan in the 80s and 90s, which are certainly two different situations to be playing in. The only way to make a reasoned assertion as to who's better is to put a prime-condition Wilt in the 90s and a peaked Jordan in the 60s and let them have at it. Thus, my answer is that trying to establish a g.o.a.t. is problematic when comparing different rules, differences in points per game (which were continually going down during Jordan's time in the NBA), differences in competition, etc. etc. etc.

  • we'll atleast one person stepped up. The g.o.a.t should be a player that you cannot replace. Chamberlain avg freaking 50ppg FOR A WHOLE SEASON. I don't care when it was. You people say avg 50ppg was no big deal since it was back in the day, but when nobody in this day of age can avg 37ppg like jordan once did there not jordan worthy? It don't make any sense.

  • Having a 50 PPG season is a big deal... it would just be interesting to see if Jordan could do it when Wilt did do it image

  • I think averaging a triple double for a season is a much greater accomplishment then scoring 50 ppg for a season...

  • funnyguy not only did chamberlain avg 50ppg, but Wilt Chamberlain averaged 24.3 ppg, 23.8 rpg, and 8.6 apg for a season before. I must also mention the year wilt chamberlain averaged 50+ppg he shot OVER 70% FROM THE FIELD.......which is another record that probably won't get broke.

  • No one has even said the right answer yet...it's Bill Russell. Guy changed the game, basically invented the blocked shot and the dominant center.
