1853 Seated Liberty Quarter

While the scans don't do this coin justice, this is another coin I picked up this weekend which appears to have been put away for an awfully long time. The shield has full hairline detail, and the word liberty is full and strong. The rays emanating from the eagle on the reverse are pin point precise and I really can't find much evidence of wear.

Any opinions on possible grading?

Looks like a nice XF to me.
Give Blood (Red Bags) & Platelets (Yellow Bags)!
  • Looks like a solid Au maybe Au-55 on a good day. Looks like some original grey toning, very nice coin.image

Looks like a common date in uncommon, original condition. Very nice!

Always looking for original, better date VF20-VF35 Barber quarters and halves, and a quality beer.

The Arrows & Rays design is certainly a fun one to own.

I would grade this coin EF45, although I am assuming the scan is accurate and the coin has almost no lustre remaining. Sometimes scans seem to flatten lustre -- with some lustre, I think it could grade AU50.

I would be curious to hear other members' opinions on the toning. Perhaps cleaned a long time ago, and retoned?

Looks original to me with the lighter areas around the stars and along the outline.
The only thing I wonder is if that is a scratch in the right field as viewed.
Overall looks like a nice coin from the scan.
The pictures are too small for me to get a good idea of the grade.

  • My eyes aren't good enough to tell XF40 from 45 with that scan, but it looks like a nice original XF coin. If it has XF45+ details but no luster (as the scan appears) it may have the proverbial "light old cleaning".

The arrows and rays quarters are definitely in my top five for type coins.image

  • That kind of state of preservation is not easy to come by.. Nice XF-AU.As it's been said by the others.. the angle may not show some lustre.image
