Who among us visits the NGC forum and why?

I recently visited the NGC forum thinking that It might be an additional forum for new thoughts. Well, I guess it is, however, I find it moves along rather slowly in comparison to this forum. Not that many posts on a daily basis. I thought there would be more depth to each post based on the smaller number of posts but not really. How many others are visiting this site and what are your thoughts on who visits which site? I do really like the feature about how many "views" of each post have occurred. You can really get an appreciation for which posts people like to keep track of vs. post to.

  • I like the # of views idea but i have only been thier once it seemed to move to slow i just found this one today link It seems slow but it is just getting started.

I go across the street periodically. There are a few posters I like to keep up with that don't cross-post. I like the Q & A forum, and I like some of the informational articles. Some contain pretty obscure information (I loved the SMS article). Not a bad board, just not as busy as this one.

You guys are right, its very limited, I hope it grows, NGC is great. We need more forums.
So far, this one is my favorite.

  • I check in there every couple of days. If you check any more often, you get disappointed by the lack of new posts & responses. I guess it would help if I actually initiated more posts, myself, but on the few occasions that I have I got little or not response.

I use to post there but haven't even read the NGC board lately. The reason being is that I just don't have the time.

Where could I find a bunch of people as nice as we have
on this Forum. Since that is the case, why go looking for change. Bear

I go there about once a week or so just to see what is going on. It is pretty slow over there...

  • Only once I visited so I can't really evaluate it...BUT....I did read a post while there entered by one of our familiar posters here ( you know who you are ) that refered to us here as koolaid drinkers ! Myself, I prefer the real stuff...orange juice, with PULP !! too...Pat

The Kool-Aid drinkers are not the regular forum users. They are the people who follow blindly.
  • I go there every so often, and it's like going from Seattle to Portland, not as busy, but every once in a while you find something worth the trip.
  • I drop by the NGC forum every couple ofweeks. Sometimes you get just what you need. I wonder why the participation is so low? Maybe because they do not have all of the nice, sweet, considerate members that prevail on this site?

I spend more time here because of a few forum members that I communicate with on a daily basis. The forum over there is only several months old. It has a different perspective. It's not a place to go if you want to see endless conversations about one type of coin, i.e. kennedies etc., look at this ebay auction, grade this coin for me, etc. The people who have posted the most over there tend to be long time collectors, have done some research themselves before they jump in with questions. Board seems to be geared toward more mature questions, not that there aren't a lot here.

It's a good place to post if you actually want questions answered, either by NGC or other forum members. The graders and tech, registry people take an active part in the discussions. Part of the problem here, is that many questions go unanswered and its human nature to assume the worst.

On the coin forums, there is very little of the petty bickering that sometimes rears its ugly head here, but also there isn't the gratuitous head bobbing in agreement or sometimes childlike grandfather drivel that invariably enters into discussions here and leads off into totally different discussions that leads into topics like animal defecations. There is not nearly as much discussion about PCGS over there as there is about NGC and other grading companies on here. There is a common view there that at least three of the grading companies do an outstanding job in the grading arena. Because the registry accepts both NGC and PCGS coins there isn't that ongoing battle.

Overall its quality more than quantity. Having said that, here I think it is easier to jump in and start posting, someone like imforreal or itsforreal, whatever his nick is would be 100% ignored there. Arch would have him out of there in no time flat. They monitor what is said over there on a daily basis and it is done well with humor.

As for the koolaid comment, I have made that a couple of times here, but as greg said that refers to a small minority, less than 1% of the people. Both places are great places to learn and meet collectors with the same interests.

Once or twice looking for some of the original board buddies that don't post much here anymore. Weren't there either. Wish you folks would at least pm me and let me know you're still around and doing okay.

I did see Bohica over there. image

I do both boards. That board is similar to this board, when this one first started. Give it time, it'll take off. More admin. responses over there to specific questions regarding grading etc. Good group too!

  • HI, Greg and Mike, the kool aid comment was made in humor as when I read it over there it made me laugh. I knew what the person was getting atimage but at the time I posted the comment my dern emotion option was not working right so it may have came across wrong. I wasn't trying to be offensive. I apologize if it seemed that way. With that said and at the risk of sounding like a suck up image I would like to say that I always look forward to both of your posts as you guys both seem to have a lot of numismatic knowledge.....Pat

I don't take this stuff personally, some people's opinions are different, some good, some bad, etc. Everyone is entitled to post and everyone is entitled to answer. image I just wanted to clarify what the term meant. I am obvioulsy a ND fan, more for my friends who work there than any other reasons. I will gladly admit that there are way too many blue & gold koolaid drinkers out there. In fact I have had to learn to keep my um thoughts to myself many times in the stadium. image As hard as they may be for some to believe.image

I rarely go there unless there is a reminder like this thread.
Like some others, not enough time to read and/or post on both.
The most money I made are on coins I haven't sold.

    Got quoins?
  • I read the NGC forums from time to time but its pretty slow i.e. same topics that where there 2 days or 3 days ago

  • I checked out the Coin Talk forum mbbiker mentioned. The software looks good, I registered. They are just getting started but I did see a cool image of an ancient gold coin.

Perhaps the biggest BB will remain the biggest? Like the network effect, people go there because it is the biggest. The check back more often because it is busier. So it just gets bigger and busier. Or are there enough coin nuts online who want to post to keep several sites going?

I am a regular over there. The tone of the boards suit me better there because I have minimal interest in eBay issues, which dealer is good or bad, what do I think of this super-grade modern issue, this service or that service sucks, etc.

The volume over there is much lower than it is here, but to me, that is a huge positive. I can't keep up here; there, I can. And, the quality (my opinion as to what is quality) to quantity ratio over there is very appealing.

As for the people, well, there're good and bad in both places. As for the level of interaction from the board admins, the other board is better in that regard. But, they're also smaller. This is not a knock against the board admins here. This board is much bigger, and you can't expect Carol, et al, to keep up any better than we can ourselves.

In general, however, I feel that it is good that we have two boards of such different personalities. I would not want to have to choose between the two.

I just posted for the first time over there. I haven't figured out all the ins and outs yet. I like the fact that this isn't the only decent place for us coin addicts. I'm hoping to be able to get some more detailed answers over there. Yes, it's slower there, but give it a little time. By the way, I've noticed a bunch of familiar names over there.
