Looks like an honest, original coin to me. A few rim ticks, a few hits or pits on the obverse. Nothing major and nothing out of the ordinary for a nice circulated coin. Wear-wise, I'd say VF20 is pretty accurate. I think the color brings out the details nicely too.
Time sure flies when you don't know what you are doing...
This coin brings back memories, as it is much like the ones that got me started in coin collecting. My grandfather owned a sporting goods store in Maine, and had saved several jars of Barber quarters and halves (very few dimes for some reason). Most of them ranged in grade from AG to VG, so the one pictured would have been a choice example. Sorry for the nostalgia -- thanks for posting!
Looks like a good coin, properly graded. I can't place this seller off the top of my head, but I believe I have had some good transactions or communications with this one. My memory is cooked right now.
I basically agree with everyone else. I'd call it a barely made it VF, but I'm no expert in the series, and I've looked at more halves than quarters. Not sure if they wear a little differently.
As for the toning, I like it. It has a nice untampered look that accents the details nicely. I'll soon be shopping for one of my own and will search for a similar looking, but slightly lighter, example.
I'm just a type collector, but from my limited experiece and what I've heard from others, it's tough to find any no problem original VF and XF Barbers anywhere. I got this Half (Obverse, Reverse) which I like VERY much from a board member recently. I'd been half-heartedly looking for one that fit my tastes for several years. I've actually seen a number of passable but less attractive (to my eye) common dates on Ebay since then, but the scans, terms, and/or feedback usually leave something to be desired. If I see a nice one I'll drop you a line if you like, in case you missed it.
