why do people think they're cool for sniping??

It quite retraded that people feel the need to announce that they sniped a $15 card on eBay. Ohhhh wooooooooooow you waited til the last second and bid on an auction and won a cheap card. COOL!!! Seems rather trivial to me, but i guess it takes all kinds. Can anyone tell me why sniping is such a grand occasion worthy of it's own thread to some people?? I just don't get it..... and feel the need to further educate myself

  • Why do people think its cool to start a thread that starts crap here? Like "why do people think they're cool for sniping??"

    hmmm image
  • alright...you collect Francis...say you saw a spa rc of him that books 150...adn you could get it for 15...if i did that i would want to tell someone..its an amazing deal!
  • Hey Baljit, you don't like my thread, be a smartie and don't click on it....... that isn't real hard. I was simply asking a question. If you don't have a somewhat constructive answer, move to the next thread. Or better yet, post for the 10,000th time that you're looking for Webber cards, MAYBE someone on the planet earth missed the first 9999 of them, but i doubt it

Richy-- bragging about getting a good deal is one thing, but bragging about sniping, which is simply waiting til the last second to bid on an auction to hide your interest in the item, is something different, and something i don't get. i was just hoping someone could help me out

  • Jerik, man you disappointed me. I was hoping for a bunch of cussing. Man, I had you all wrong.

By the way, got any Webbers for trade? image
  • Sniping saves you money. Reason is, no one ever bids their absolute max and hates to be outbidded. That's where the term "bid war" comes in. That's why you see some cards go well over book value and normal selling price. A bid war is basically between 2 or more people with a bit of extra spending cash who refuse to lose on a card they want. Sniping gives those with limited cash a bit of a level field to play on. Think about this. If you snipe someone, why do they get upset? Reason is, they are willing to bid higher, but didn't. If they bid their absolute max instead of just trying to get a steal, snipers would be out in the cold. A sniper would put in that final bid and it wouldn't be high end. But, those tightwads who get sniped and complain deserves what they get. When I snipe, I snipe with my absolute max, so if it doesn't make me the high bidder at the end, I have no regrets because I wouldn't pay any more than my absolute max.

Whenever I snipe someone, I sometimes get e-mail from ex-high bidders. I just tell them that they should have bidded their absolute max. I sniped the Scott Walker Game used Patch (NHL logo) that went for $20.49 plus shipping. The guy I sniped offered me $30 for it. Now, if he would have put in $30 while the auction was still going, I wouldn't have won it. So, you can't get mad at snipers. Just bid your absolute max and be done with it.
  • Nicely said Ike.

  • For some people it is like Vegas. Watching people throw dollars in the slot machine, only to leave before the slot pays off. Then the person watching plays the machine to get the payoff.

Some people get a kick out of it, and some don't.

  • Auto-- i understand the point of it, and the advantages, but you started an epidemic by announcing your snipes on the board. Now every time some litle kid snipes a card for $2.99 he feels "cool" and feels the need to announce it to the world like it's some sort of status symbol. It's cool that people post it, lord knows i post a lot of off topic stuff. You just started posting your snipes (usually good cards), now kids like Vittleboy think they're hip for sniping $5 cards and feel the need to tell us about it each and every time it happens. Thanks for the explanation though

Actually, it's just like a pack pull. Sniping and openning a pack both creates a thrill. In openning a pack, you don't know what you going to get. In sniping, you don't know if you are going to win. People post "Look what I just pulled!", what's wrong with people posting "Look what I just sniped!" image. They are almost identical.

Well, why do people post what they pulled? Same difference. If you snipe a $50 BV card for $4.50, how is that different from paying $4.50 for a pack and pulling a $50 card? No difference at all. As I said in another response, pack busting and sniping both give a thrill (you don't know what you will get in the pack and in sniping, you don't know if you will win). Both makes them feel good. My snipes "seem" better because the stuff I go after are high end. I am fortunate to have extra hours at work to afford it. Not everyone are able to spend $100-$200+ a month on Ebay. Just let them have their second of glory and move on. My motivation on sniping is different which is why my deals seem better. I base my deals on average Ebay selling price which means if I was to immediately repost it on ebay, I would make more than I spent. Majority of the others base their deals on Beckett BV. But if that makes them happy, let them have their moment. I do agree though that a lot of them are not steals, but you can blame that on their faith in Beckett BV.

  • Thanks Jerik for the visual...hope your wife wasnt there. You might lose a few points with her...

BTW, save the remains, just incase you run out of coffee (you ran out of toilet paper, so I will assume you run out of many things), throw them in some milk and you should enjoy a good cup of your own crap.

You'll then know how we feel when you post stuff like this thread. image

    Good night.
  • It was a nice discussion while it lasted. image
  • It was a good discussion and some good points were made. I just didnt like the way JErik brought it up.
