Check to see if the doubling is flat. If it is than it is not a double die. The dies bounced around on the coin presses back then. I have seen doubling on many dates. And if the doubling is flat on the lower date its the bouncing of the die.

    Byron,

Sounds like what you have is a machine double date, like Tony said. Where the die bounces causing a doubling effect.

They are not worth a premium, but I collect them for fun if you want to sell it. There are some actual repunched dates (in the die) like the 31-D, 29-S and 35-P, but no 26-D that I know of. This is covered in the Mercury Dime book by David Lang.

  • there is an actual shelf between the double die on the date where the bottem 1926 is slighty off to the left of the top date. this is not visable on the in god we trust . and like i said the lib in liberty also shows doubling where the bottem is slighty off to the left with the second dat on top and of course slighty off to the right. this also has a self . neither the date or the lib are flat.
