Binion Silver Dollars on the Coin Vault

The Coin Vault was on early this morning pushing Binion Silver Dollars in an NGC holder which says "Binion Hoard" and I could not see any grade assigned.

The dollars shown didn't appear uncirculated or of investment quality and their only claim to fame is that they came from the Binion hoard.

The hawkers said that these coins are sure to escalate in numismatic value because of the size of the hoard and their "Pedigree"

What do you think about this?
A thing of beauty is a joy for ever

I think these things are truely bogus. Nothing but someones accumulation of circs. I have plenty of circs, but you think when I croak I'll get my own special slab and get hawked on coin vault? Heck no, unless I get tens of thousands more! That's the only difference I can see, he had a s*&^load of them.
  • I dont think any1 cares about the pedigree its worth nothing, and a coin being rare because of an insert may only happen for people that buy the plastic.

Let's see, the greater the supply, the higher the price? Doesn't see consistent with what I was taught in Economics 101.
  • These guys and gals selling coins on TV can spew more bullsh*t then a whole herd of Holsteins, but one fact is plain; the folks at NGC and PCGS are the ones creating the "speciality" bogus slabs that they are peddling to newbies. It is every bit as bad as colorized coins, IMO.image

There is nothing wrong with The Binnion pedigree or other promotional items , as long as the premium
charged is reasonable. The hosts on the shopping networks simply lie and use screaming and other
vocal techniques to cheat the public. They are of course , a blight and disease on all of numismatics.
They are former telemarketers and know very little about numismatics. The mere sight of them makes
    me violently sick.

I'm fervently anticipating the arrival of the 10 lb bag I bought last week.

I have a bunion, is it worth much?
  • I think it is an interesting subset for a limited number of collectors that combine their love of coins and a love of a good yarn and the Binion story is a juicy one. Murder, intrigue and silver. what more can you want? BUT. I think anyone with a taste for this kind of collecting has to be completely aware that the coin they are buying, hopefully at a more moderate premium than you find at HSN, doesn't have any special allure to the average collector. I would compare 'hoard collectors' on par with those that collect bodybagged coins or counterfiets on purpose. If the special designation makes you happy, be happy and get one. Just dont expect it to hold the value you put on it. IMHO. Kris

  • Russ----- ROFLMAO...don't break that special seal or it will only be worth junk silver prices...oh wait thats all it's worth now.

I love their analogy to the Redfield Hoard, and how the Redfield coins are worth so much more beccause of the Holder. Well we all know the history of that hoard and many of the uncirculated tough dates it had in it. The Robert Chambers guy keeps saying a MS65 81 S is worth $5,000 in a Redfield Holder rather than the $500 they would charge for a NGC graded example. Hey Robert, I got a nice 82 S in a Redfield Holder that will probably go 65, and I'll let you have it for $4500. image

I love that show (the operative word here is SHOW). It teaches you everything you should stay away from. Just think if you or your parents went to Binions back before 1965, and saved a few silver dollars, you too could have part of the hoard---Right Now---and not even know it. I wonder how bad that junk silver is that they had to use cloth bags so you can't see what is inside the bag (they could have used heavy plastic like some of the casinos use so you can see inside). Who knows it could all be clad? If you open the bag you can't send it back, but if you don't open the bag, you don't know what is inside.

I love all the MS70 and PR70Ultra Cameos, too. How can one service find so, many more than PCGS? Why do most of the 70 coins get sent to NGC and not very many of the top coins get sent to PCGS?

(These are all hypothetical questions--I really don't need the answers--I think everyone on this board knows the answers.)image

Actually, ShopAtHome has one redeeming quality; Julie Tello on the sports collectibles show.image

  • They're on right now, a rebroadcast from last night, the exact same show. They're selling seven cents for $90.00. A large cent, a Flying Eagle cent, two Indians, a steel cent, a regular wheat cent and a memorial cent. The Lincolns look to be at least AU, the large cent is heavily circulated and the Flying Eagle and one of the Indians looks to have been harshly cleaned. The whole lot MIGHT have a value of $20.00. image

I bought a couple of Binions to add to my casino collectibles. Didn't buy from one of the TV networks, and I waited until the frenzy subsided. Still paid more that normal for them, but sometimes you just have to buy something because you want it.

    Cheers,
