  • I take out some of my un-identified world coins and spend a few hours trying to identify them. If I succeed, it's like getting a new coin.

It may not be coin related,
but a hot fudge sunday usually does it for me. Bearimage

I'm a gold type collector, but there isn't anything out there right now to satisfy my cravings. So yesterday I went down to my local coin shop and bought 7 U.S. 19th century coins that I knew absolutely nothing about. I spent $25 and ended up with an 1883 racketeer's nickel (VF+), an 1892 Columbian exposition half dollar (AU), an 1834 large cent (minor corrosion), an 1869 and 1902 nickel (AG), an 1865, 3 cent piece (F), and last, but not least, an 1836, 5 cent bust. I've since spent quite a bit of time looking up these coins in my new Breen's Encyclopedia and on the internet to see what I have. I'd never even heard of a racketeer's nickel! It had been a long time since I've bought anything not gold and not in plastic, but these little treasures sure reminded me why I like to collect coins. They may not be anything of tremendous value, but they did satisfy my cravings for a little while. By the way, anyone have any 20th century gold they need to get off their hands?image

What about doing some good reading. Pick a book about your favorite series and read up.

  • If I can't find a coin I want or can afford, the next best alternative is to buy a book or catalog. I love reading the descriptions and looking at the plates in catalogs. It doesn't matter if it's a famous collection, or not.
