How Would You Grade This Dollar..1884-CC??

My scanner is terrible, however, the coin is bright white and FULLY struck over the ear. The reverse is nearly as struck. Just got this back.

  • I never get these right......I would guess a PQ 66 if the strike is good, although it does look mushy over the ear. Sweet looking coin!

MS67, but the scan is somewhat fuzzy.

It looks mushy over the ear but if you say the 2 lines that make up 3 strands of hair are there I guess 66. I can't see it in the scan but I'm sure it's lusterous. I only see some small ticks by the date, a small one by the mouth and some dip residue by star #1. Nice looking 66 but I doubt 67 though close.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
  • Man, thats like asking for a grade while holding the coin up half way across the roomimageimage Could be anything from AU 58 to a MS69 from the scan I am looking at ...LOL

ms 65 unless the reverse is really bad. PCGS is tough on this year CC for some reason.

  • I also concur that PCGS is tough on this CC date, without looking at the reverse, I would guess MS66 PQ. The mark on the neck, in my opinion, would keep it from a 67.

  • I know you say the coin is fully struck over the ear. However, it sure appears to be mushy, though the delineation between the ear and curl looks nice. Some small marks around the date and you say the reverse is not quite as well struck. I'll say MS-65.

Years ago probably 65.Today it's got to be at least 66.

  • I'd say MS66 but if the coin has a full strike and really good luster-MS67.
careful- that light at the end of the tunnel might be a freight train!
  • I'm going to say MS-64....from the pic, the strike above the ear looks very weak(as someone said) and the ding on the neck(as someone said) would keep this from a higher grade.it is simply too prominent and distracting...and of course, we can't see the reverse....so this is a really wild guess.....and of course, I'm a newbie....so that doesn't help either image

Without reviewing the other posts, I'd say a lock 66 shot 67.

If I had sent it, it would be a 58.
  • C'mon Dragon, what's the verdict? It better not be a 58!
  • OK Dragon, let's read and/or see the results!

Sure wish I could post better pics. It's in a PCGS MS65 holder.

So why's it a 65? Looks pretty clean. It's the strike isn't it?

Dog, I wish I knew, the strike is full. I have about a dozen or so really nice hand picked common date CCs in PCGS MS66 and this piece is better than any of them.

If the reverse is pristine then I would try have it graded again.
