POLL: Women and numismatics.

At a recent coin club meeting as well as at coin shows. A popular topic, which I find fascinating , came up

Why are there so few wowen in numismatics?
My local coin club demographic: 47 men: 6 women: (of those six, 4 are wives or girlfriends who come
casually and have no interest, other than just being with their husband/boyfriend)

Typical look accross the coin show venue: Local Clearwater , FL show: 200 tables including NGC/ANACS.
A glance yield the following results: 8% female/ half of that , again wives/girlfriends behind tables,
helping husbands/boyfriends.

When one looks at other hobbies, ie: philately, jewelry, nascar, toys, etc, it seems to be more even.
Why do you think that is?
Also , please tell us about your experience.

  • This has been a topic of discussion before. I don't know why not many women are in Numismatics. Maybe it's just because they like to spend money instead of collecting it?image

You could be right, Is it the idea, "If I can't wear it, I won't collect it?". or is it a disinterest in
history. Numimatics and history are so heavily linked.
I think 90% of the viewers for The History Channel are men? I really don't have an answer.
Perhaps our female membership can enlighten us.

Maybe they don't like collecting coins because men are featured on almost all of them. Liberty doesn't count since she is symbolic and not a "real" woman.

  • Okay, females, please enlighten us on the low enrollment of females in Numismatics. The history connection is an interesting hypothesis. In school, I notice the boys are usually more interested in history then the girls.

So the answer to this is:
    Can't see her
    ugly
    ugly
    really ugly
    great splits
    not a real person
    not a real person

Still may not be enough to interest women in the hobby.

My Wife and I started collecting together. Went to local shop, shows and even would go to safe box and play with our coins.

Yes this is rare, but it can happen. The greatest thing about it was she would talk ME into buying a coin. And also to have that second opinion right next to you with a glass in her hand.

    Stman,

My wife is a better judge of cameo than me. I think it's because she doesn't like coins.image Every time I hold one up and ask does this look dcam, she accurately predicts the designation. I wish I could.

I don't know but most of the time when I make payment for a coin purchase I send the check or PayPal to a woman. Figure that out.

It seems there are differences in the way men and women think. Men are dreamers, and when we
go too far into dream land, its the woman who bring us back to practical land.
If it wasnt for women( and lady bears ), we males would probably starve to death
after we spent all of our money and financial assets on coins, cars and fishing gear. Bear

  • Interesting question.
When you learn the answer, find out why there's so few Black coin collectors.
A few years back I met the Editor of a newspaper that was targeted to a largely black populated community, a black man in his 50's.
As the Jackie Robinson coins had just come out, I started a discussion with him concerning blacks on US coinage. He didn't know about the Jackie Robinson coins, and couldn't believe there were other US coins with blacks on them.
I agreed to write an article for publication in his paper that described the commemerative coins featuring Black Americans. I don't know what impact that article had, but maybe it gave someone a little more pride, and might have even got someone into coin collecting.

I remember reading about Ginger Rapsus fairly regularly a decade or so ago (would have been either in CW or The Numismatist but haven't seen her name mentioned in a while. She wrote a book on US Clad Coinage in 1992.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

  • Men are hunters, conquerers, critters who , after winning something, want a trophy for it - no matter what it is. It is an innate thing in the male of our species - to collect things. You could say that it's "normal" for men to collect.

Women are nurturers and comforters so they don't really collect things. When they do collect, they usually collect other that we, as men, cannot see any value in... grandkids, pics of family members, recipes, memories, stories, newspaper clippings, old good books, a piece of glassware or crystal that's special to them, a candle or a sock, a babies booties, and all of the other things that make life full and happy...

    for men :-)
