So we all collect coins.....what else?

I know we all collect coins, but now I'm interested in what else a coin collector does. What are your other passions?

Coca-Cola items and antique cameras. The center of my camera collection is a 1909 Kodak Folding Pocket camera that still works. I'm still looking for a Coke vending machine that needs a bit of work.

Great question - I've always been curious about this. For the past 7 years, I have been collecting (and enjoying) fine wine. I can say that my purchases have slowed down since I caught coin fever again last December. I'm only buying a couple really hard to find bottles a month. Good thing I've got a couple hundred waiting to be opened image If you ever need advice on a bottle to go with dinner or as a gift, feel free to PM me.

When I'm not looking for that perfect coin, I'm usually putting in some more flight time. I'm working my way through my pilot's certificates to one day work as a pilot in the airlines. About two weeks ago I had the opportunity to ferry a small plane from Vero Beach, Florida to Chino, California. There are a lot of beautiful places in the U.S. Coin collecting and flying, I couldn't have it any better! image
I've had great transactions with people like: drwstr123, CCC2010, AlanLastufka, Type2, Justlooking, zas107, StrikeOutXXX, 10point, 66Tbird, and many more!
  • Rare books, especially antiquarian natural history color plate books, antiquarian natural history prints, first edition Mark Twains, rare U.S. currency, books on human behavior, coins, currency and books. Yes, books about books. I'm still looking for a book about books about books. I'm sure there's one out there.

i'm a recovering golf junkie, down to no more than 2 rounds a week... have a great collection of antique golf balls, a very feeble collection of antique golf clubs, although a very sizeable collection of putters of all ages, and a rather ridiculously large golf library which is now beginning to cede ground and shelf space to the numismatic wing. as with many others, i see, i am a musician (bass player) who gigs very sporadically now that i'm an old fart.

Coins (US, Polish, and medieval) and Federal Reserve star notes. Also Matchbox, Hotwheels and some other 1:60 scale cars. I would collect real cars, but I lack the finances. I collect some older books and a few posters. I'd like to be like Dog97 and collect weapons but I don't have enough money for that either.

In Poland, prostitution is not exactly legal, but it is accepted, and agencies advertise by slipping a business card-sized "calling card" on people's cars. These colorful little leaflets are great artwork, and for a couple years I developed an extensive collection of them (which is, I'm sure, the best and most unique collection around, as I started in 1999, when these agencies were developing their marketing skills, and some were using xerox copies. Now the business has developed, and the cards are much higher quality, so I think my collection, which contains the older style cards, is unique). If anyone is interested in buying the whole collection from me for $250 (plus shipping), please PM me.

  • I collect Hot Wheels and Matchbox. I have over 8,000 from early redlines to current. I specialize in the 1965 Mustang Convertible in Hot wheels and have over 60 different variations on just that one car. I also collect real cars and I currently own a restored Michigan State Police cruiser that is 98% complete and original. From that project I started to collect Michigan State Police items and have quite an extensive collection on very hard to locate items. imageimageimageimageimageimage

Also like Dog97, I collect BIG Bore guns. I have a 3 inch barrel derringer that shoots a single 45-70 and I also have a AR-15 that is converted to shoot a 50AE. I would love to own a 50BMG rifle.imageimageimageimageimage

I just returned to Detroit from Minnesota after driving 1440 miles in 24 hours. I picked up a VERY RARE 1967 Mustang Coupe for a buddy of mine, that has the GT HI-PO option. They only made "77" Coupes in 1967 that had this option. VERY RARE!!!!!!

Unfortunately for me I had to change hobbies quite a few times. When I could get around I use to design(CAD), and build RC aircraft (instructor for 15 years), while my real job was restoring classic cars (project manager). After that is was gold hunting. I inherited a lot of it and made jewelry, but playing with fire was just to dangerous. Now that I'm truly homebound it's computer's, micro RC aircraft, and coins. To kill the endless hours I do off loom bead weaving of classic art, consisting of thousands of seed beads per piece. It's not something I freely admit to but it does bring in a little coin money and beats sitting in front of the tube all day.

I have lots of pets. 2 dogs, 5 cats and 2 birds. My German Sheppard is a lot like me. When people first look at him they are terrified and once they are brave enough to pet him they see he's harmless. Give him good food, time to sleep and and a long walk everyday and he's pretty happy.

I also play the djembe drum. It's an african drum and a blast to play.
  • I also collect Rookwood and Van Briggle art pottery, Roycroft metal, books and ephemera, and am a big Theodore Roosevelt buff. I like stuff related to the "end of the West" and read Zane Grey and Louis L'Amour novels as my fun reading. My kids. And the Grateful Deadimageimageimage.

Until the kids started coming along flying was my burning passion (private pilot, instrument rated and once proud owner of a 1959 Cessna 150 straight tail call sign N5900E). My other current passion along with numismatics is martial arts (Jiu-Jitsu which means the "gentle art").

  • Why this topic opens up a lot for me as I collect the following: Baseball Cards, Stamps, Bottles, Records, Hot Wheels, Action Figures, Old Camera's, Avon, Comic Books, Old Books, Wine. I think that's about everything, but I am clearly and all around collector and love everyone of them.image
  • I enjoy collecting autographed personality pics, coins( a recent undertaking), music making equipment (guitars, amps, pedals, etc.), love to play golf (when it cooperates), love to sail a 31 foot Catalina, and play in a band of 40+ guys (fun but still a bunch of old farts)image

Its4real, I just finished 18 with some of my bud's and was long and straight all day, but couldn't putt worth a (you know). Missed 5 or 6 4 footers. Today was one of those "just for the fun of it" kinda days. I still play music a few nights a month too. Guitar, you?

  • Don,
We practice 1 evening a week - yep - guitar and lead vocals. i would rate us about a "c" band - we have most of the licks down but just can't seem to get it perfect. Of course, with a once a week practice - what can you expect? I'm headed to practice in about 40 min.

Long and straight, huh? I could use some of that next week - we are having an "old fart" vs. 'old timers" golf tourney down in Biloxi , Miss. Just 4 of us though - 2 OF's and 2 OT's - one of which is my Dad. Last time they took us on - they beat us fair and square over 54 holes of play. Next week's going to be just 36 holes but my buddy and I have really been practicing lately.

I have the long part down - the straight I am still workin on. image

I'll let you know how it turns out.

I have a very nice baseball card collection, and a collection of about 40 Hot Wheels "Treasure Hunts" - I got them all from a store for $1 or so each, never the 20 bucks they go for on eBay.
  • Boys Scouts of America patches.
    Thanks image
  • I once collected guns but have left that behind and sold all but a few. Now, my only collecting interest is coins. But my other passion is scuba diving. Have not been able to go since I moved to OK from Florida and really miss it. There is nothing better than being 120 feet under the water all alone (No, you should not do that) on a wreck. It is the most relaxing/humbling thing you could ever do.

Spear fishing and snatching a lobster now and then for dinner is an added bonus.

  • I myself have been sailing for over 30 years and love guilt free golf (thats when the wife knows your playing and doesn't hold it against you). Coin collecting has only been a recent addition as I was looking for something to do in the evening hours (reading and research).

  • I also collect currency and tokens, Barbie dolls, handmade articles, books, and used to collect stamps and recipes (still have those collections).
