Got to thinking: How many SMS's are in the "wrong" holder?

How many of the SMS's graded do you think are really regular mint struck Kennedies? Some SMS's, especially the 1965's are tough to tell between Mint State regular issue and the SMS.
Of course the SMS's are much more common in grades of MS66 and above.

I know I had a regular issue Accugrade MS69 (I know, I know. . .) 1965 Kennedy that definitely is NOT an SMS (doesn't even have the sharp rims-). Now, sure it's also NOT a "69", but on a 'cross at any grade' with PCGS it came back as an SMS (66).

I guess it could happen both ways. SMS coins that have been graded out as regular Mint State (like the one and only PCGS MS68 40%'er?).
What do you think?
It's enough to make me nervous in buying these sight unseen- no matter what the holder insert might say.

  • I sent off a MS 1965 Kennedy myself, and it now resides in a SMS 64 PCGS slab. It is not SMS and is a MS66 IMO, I can see them giving the 64 if it was an SMS though, but cm'on, there are no mirrors, the coin has a satiny finish to it and the rims aren't sharp, as Braddick mentioned. I asked Carol to see if someone could look into it and never heard a word back.

    Yes!
I'm optimistic, but realize it's the real world too and if PCGS can error, certainly NGC can too.

I submitted a batch of SMS coins once, all with SMS coin numbers. A Roosie (I think 1966) came back as MS67 (Not SMS). I sent it back noting the error, and it returned in an MS68 SMS holder.

  • Nearly all of the ms66 or higher kennedy of that year are actually sms in
wrong holders. Don't buy the plastic.
    Say no to ACG!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • That's an interesting observation...

  • I would suggest that about 1/3 of the business strike population coins are really SMS issues that were not attributed correctly. Not necessarily the fauly of grading companies, as there is no consensus on the ways to tell the two issues apart.

  • I just got my 1966 business strike. I hope you guys are wrong on the high percentage being being attributed incorrectly.
I do think that if a grading company is going to attribute them differently they should have some diagnostic to tell them
apart. If they don't then it doesn't seem right to label them differently.

  • On the Lincoln side of things, a 1966 ms68rd showed up in the online population report about 6 weeks ago. It is a pop 1 and there are only 2 ms67rd's. Anyone who has tried to slab early date Lincoln memorials - 1959 through 1967- realizes how difficult it is to find a 67 let alone a 68. Sight unseen it is almost certain that is a SMS Lincoln hiding out in a regular strike slab. Anyone and evryone I've talked to about agrees with that assessment.

Recently I bought some BU rolls of 65,66 and 67 dimes and quarters. Sent in about 50 of them to be graded and PCGS atrributed 5 coins as SMS. These were coins I took out of the rolls so I know they aren't. Have a 1966 half that isn't attributed as SMS but obviously is.
