From Yesterday's Coin Show (my first)

airplanenutairplanenut Posts: 22,148 ✭✭✭✭✭
Yesterday, as you ALL should know, i finally got to my first show, the Garden State Coin Show in Parsippany, NJ.

When I first got there, my parents decided they didn't want to stay, so they gave me money, a phone, and said "Bye!" PERFECT! I began meandering past the many tables, noting any cert. buffs that I found along the way. By the time I had seen every table, I headed to the corner where TomB, in the deep purple shirt, had his table. I went over and we started talking- soon enough he showed me some truly amazingly toned coins- Anaconda style!

After we had talked for quite a while, I headed back out hoping to find a dealer where I could dump my SMS 1c and use the credit for a buff... as I was walking I found a nice bucket of *gasp* darkside for 25c/each, so, because LordMinivan wanted me to look for some stuff, I stopped by... thanks to the Lord, I found two really nice half crowns (which I LOVE) and two other nice coins (can't remember what they were). No coins for Lordy, though...

As my chances of finding a dealer who would take my *modern* dwindled, I realized that this show might not be the place to do the swap. I still a few more nice, raw coins and met up with a friend, too. It was great to meet Tom and I must say, I need to get to shows more often!

Jeremy

PS- I showed Tom my lovely Toned ASE (with the insert covered)- he said, with the two small scratches, that it was a 67... you should have seen his face when I said 63!

PPS- While searching my bookmarks of coin dealers yesterday, I found someone with an inexpensive (compared to eBay, online dealers, and even the show dealers) 1938-D MS66 buff... just the coin I wanted (the added fact that it is PCGS and not NGC means I can add it to my reg. set) I emailed him, and, even if I don't get a full trade, I think a partial trade would leave me very happy image

PPPS- Just for emphasis- Tom is a really cool guy!

Airplanenut - If I went to a coin show with your folks, do you think they would give me money to spend? Bear image

Airplanenut: First shows are great. I got to my first one a couple of years ago and it was a totally different experience than buying online or even going to a local dealer. Many more people and tons of coins and a ton of variety too. It is easy to find something that you have never seen before (like your darkside stuff) and just have to buy it. That is what collecting is all about!

My neck is fine... and I did see some truly awesome coins (and some of Braddick quality- had I been given more time, I would have searched some clearance bins for the worst they had)

Cool. ALWAYS pleasant being associated with the "bargain bin of Numismatics"! image
-Glad you had a great show.
When you have a moment, how about a scan of that toned ASE? MS63 or not, a bet it's a beaut!

You've seen her... but here she is again- with my new scanner, the reverse finally looks pretty much just like the coin (not brown and overdipped-dull as it used to!) YAY! image The obverse scan has always been good image

PS- tell me she is a 63...

since the bottom of the reverse (the blue you see just above the black) didn't come out... you can see the whole scan here

  • It looks like end roll toning on the reverse. But the obverse wouldn't be toned like that if the reverse was end roll toned. The toning on the obverse suggests album toning, but I wouldn't know how to explain the weird toning mark on the reverse.image

Do you have any idea on how it got toned?

All I know of the coin is this:

It got toned and my dealer somehow got it...

As I was about to settle for a mediocre and rim bumped circ morgan with some nice toning, i saw, in the safe, a seated half, and asked to see the tray in which it was stored... long story short...

I found this coin and got it instead of the morgan... CHEAP (and a MUCH nicer coin with my birthyear image)

May I borrow your parents? There's a show coming up here on the 21st.

Shows are great, aren't they? I was sure you'd have a good time. One question: did we cover everything you needed to bring? (from the earlier thread)

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Can I fly out to go with you? I want to live in Washington SOOOOOOO badly (I will when I get a job [for Boeing]). They didn't give so much as LEND... I would have had to pay them back had I used their funds image

To my dissatisfaction, no, he does not... he seems to have resemblance to members of the homo sapien species

Yay! Money! Speaking of checking accounts... I get one tomorrow... no more parents bugged when I can't use PayPal!!!

He only got to see the front of the coin & the front of the model.

I fondly remember taking the train into Boston to attend the Bay State show with my brother in the late 70s & early 80s.
