My experience on this board is completely opposite of stman

I've only been on this board about a month but the one thing that really impresses me is how inclusive it is. You have people just starting out asking basic questions and getting tons of responses and you have true experts that talk about stuff that no one else knows about. I don't know where else in numismatics you can have open discussions with so much diverse input. One thing for sure is that I have gotten more than I have given. It's also made me laugh a lot. Where else can a coin collector share funny things about coins than here. I don't know about everyone else but no one around my house is into coins so they don't get the jokes.

As far as "cliques" go I don't really see that. There are people who have been around a long time that get more responses but that is because they've built friendships over time and it's only natural to respond to someone you know. I can't think of any other format you can walk right into and get the responses to questions like you get here.

Sometimes things get a little negative but hey that's life. It's more interesting to talk about what's wrong than what's right.

Well said, and my sentiments exactly. Even when the threads are negative, I learn from them, and I appreciate the patience/education I have and am getting.

Great place to learn, if there are cliques here I haven't noticed nor do I care. Most of my knowledge over the years has come from dealers and reading books. This is a terrific place to talk to people about issues that dealers don't want to, the books don't cover and quite frankly to find out that others have the same frustrations, fun, questions etc. The same thing happens across the street and its fun to watch that community grow. One of the nice functions available here is the search function. You can research a question and find answers without having to repost the same question. This helps eliminate the fear of posting and wondering if no one will answer, a lot of times a post isn't answered because its been asked every other week.

I clique enough when I have a job. It's funny how people are nice to me when I have 2 men with chainsaws and a 38 foot long 3x24 beam hanging 42 feet in the air and my sweaty little hands are on the joysticks.
It's funny sometimes when I read flame & troll replies. I sit here with my eyeballs bugging out of my head turning all red in the face, slobbering and cussing then I tell myself it's just a message board, calm down.
In spite of all the BS this board has a huge benefit for collectors. You can find out almost anything you want to know no matter how obscure it is.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
  • I must agree. I am new to collecting, have only limited knowledge and have received a TON of advise, help and diredction on this board.
In my opinion if I was not able to ask my simplistic questions, receive experienced direction. I would never have been able to be where I am today in my collecting.

I feel sorry that stman has gotten a bad reaction from not getting replies. Heck I have a scanner, have tried to use it, but my experience (limited) would not be worth anything as advise.
Becoming informed but still trying to learn every day!

  • I must have missed the thread that started this one, but I have to agree that you can get a response to just about any and all questions. I'm not a beginner or an expert so it's give and take for me, but I appreciate the boards for what they are........a source of Hobby information. image
  • I too must have missed STMAN's post. If anyone can provide a linky, I'd appreciate it.

While the boards do sometimes get a bit silly, the overall value of this forum should not be underestimated. I've learned a tremendous amount about numismatics by monitoring it and have met plenty of good people. And where else can you post a question regarding numismatics and have a dozen informative answers in a matter of minutes?

Not only is the advice and education here outstanding, and the historical perspective from the experienced people valuable and fascinating - it's all free. Free is a very good price.image

Well said gsaguy. I like the silly part, it is a nice break away from reality. I have learned so much, and had my ego bruised a bit too, but I deserved it. I look forward to checking out the forums every day to see what is new. Mark

My experiences have been good on this board.

I have bumped numerous messages because they did not receive a reply & I didn't know the answer. Sometimes messages just fall through the cracks, that is the way of the internet.

Although very basic and it won;t hold your hand, the "help" button is the third from the right above and one can always experiment in the test forum(I've used it trying to figure out polls).
