Ever bought a Trade Dollar box coin?

I saw one of those for the first time the other day. It was hollow and hinged to contain a picture. It was pretty well done, and a kind of cool keepsake. The one I saw had a photo of a grumpy looking guy. Anybody here loose one?image

I thought of bidding on one and forgot. After the auction closed I saw it sold for only $50 or so. image

Neat pieces...large variation in quality of manufature. Make sure hinge works properly. Many Columbian halves and a few gold pieces/ other types out there as well. K
  • I have an 1877 S and I find it to be a very interesting conversation piece. It is often reffered to as an "Opium Dollar" as the story goes, you could smuggle opium in it. A good hinge that works smoothly is a must.

On mine you would never tell it is hinged. There is a "sweet spot" on the reverse, that when gently pushed allows the other end to lift slightly and then be pulled away, and apart to reveal the inner workings.
Nice work! It 'slides' back and snaps shut without any indication of a seem (unless under magnification, of course).

These, along with the Potty Dollars are fun to own (and show off).
