QUERY: Value of Rainbow Morgans and their prices.

I remember not too long ago when dealers sold rainbow toned Morgan $1's for little or no premium. These coins are not really all that scarce, and there is very little consistency in the pricing between pieces. One coin is $200.00 and another is $1,400.00. Will serious collectors keep paying top dollar if they know that the value of their coins is somehow left to chance?

Relatively speaking, rainbow toned Morgans aren't all that scarce as you suggest. However, there's a whale of a difference between a $200.00 coin and a $1,400.00 coin and experienced collectors know the difference.
When evaluating toned coins for purchase, I first classify the quality of the color. I use a scale similar to what's used in school. "A" is the best, "D" is the worst. An "F" coin would be one with no discernable color.
I then grade the coin for marks. Other factors such as vibrancy of the colors (PL fields help) and luster are also taken into account.
A "C" grade color on an otherwise clean coin will bring something of a premium, but not much. Alternately, an "A" grade color on an MS63 quality coin may bring as much, or more, than the previously mentioned piece.
Combine A+ vibrant colors with loads of luster and very clean surfaces, and you've created a MONSTER!!!!
See, it's easy.
