why don't we make our own slabs?

I think it would be pretty easy-- two peices of plastic, a insert with your definition of the grade, something to make it air & water tight.

I know, I know, we send it off to be appraised by experts, yada yada. But the experts vary widely in the grades, get fingerprints on them, scratch them, etc. etc. I've seen a Jeff than was graded PCGS 63 or 65 on this board, but it had no steps!! (it was toned really pretty, though.)

I think if we did this, more folks would buy the coins Vs. the holders because we would have to learn to grade, and our grade would have to match the sellers before we paid 12,000.

As i stand right now, the only reason i would send in a coin to be graded is to have it attributed and make sure it's not counterfit. (of course, i'm still learning to grade the MS coins. up till 60 i'm right on the mark!!!)

As a pipe dream, what do you think?

I've been wanting coin containers that you could put a label in for a long time! I have some varieties, etc... not worth paying to get 3rd party slabbed, but 2x2's just aren't protective enough. An end user slab would be great. Even if it wasn't air/water tight, I would get some. Print out neat labels on the printer & insert! Make them to fit in PCGS/NGC boxes though...

i imagine anyone who produces the plastic slabs does it with the intent of selling them to the grading companies - the market outside of that isn't big enough with all the competitor's products out there to sustain the company by itself. remember that company who produces the slabs has to remain anonymous and PCGS, NGC definitely does not want the public to know where their slabs come from.

you can imagine the debacle if authentic slab blanks fell into the hands of some unscrupulous person (alan hagar)...

    BC,

I'm sort of doing that already....but not quite. I have Capital Plastics make specialty holders for me and I've put my toned Morgan collection in them. The only ones I've not had the nads to crack out are my PCGS MS68 pieces......mama raised some ugly kids...........but not stupid ones! image

Some eBay sellers have tried this. They have their own slabbing machine. They never go over well. They are usually gone from eBay within a few weeks.
  • do those ebay guys market the coins as graded by a third party? i wasn't talking about that; not opnly is it dishonest, it's pretty $hitty way of getting someone's money. I just ment as a way to protect the coins, and chnage as you needed.
G-man, how did you get capityol to make those? can we see them?

This is a good idea and there'd be a market for them.
Guy's like myself that don't do slabbing might buy the shells, just for protection and the uniformity.
They'd have to either snap together or have a glue that wouldn't affect the coins.
