Educate me please. What makes the first one artificial toning? The vivid purple? The fact that the center is still blast white?

Many things. Crayon colors are usually an instant giveaway. Also, the colors seem to float on the surface and do not appear to have "depth" into the coin's surface as real toning does. The harsher edges around the colors are also important. From what I remember, it is rare to find a toning pattern that looks like that one, too. The reverse is also nearly identical which is another giveaway, with the hard edges between colors.

There is a video I still need to get by JP Morgan on AT. The ANA sells it.

The absence of both greens and yellows leads me to believe that the toning on both of these coins is from the use of Liver of Sulfur. More and more frequently, the color signature of Liver of Sulfur toned coins are appearing on eBay. Atocha Coin and Jewelry regularly runs an AT American Silver Eagle, touted as "MS-70." They are smart enough not to run more than one at a time so people don't notice that ALL of them have the exact same color scheme.

Spread the word about Liver of Sulfur. NO GREENS OR YELLOWS.
(Blue, majenta, and gold is the color scheme.)

all wild-n-crazy colors are artful toning. it's just a question of how long it took to get there. i say, if you want purple coins, use your own oven to bake em.
