  • There is no way of predicting that. It's a guessing game.
  • but there has to be something....

like i bought some sosa and mcgwires during the home run race (didn't buy the rookies image though) and it went up, so last year i bought bonds rookies (knowledge of the card market from the 98 hr race season) and they went up. but as for other players, it could be which one could be going to the finals or something which could increase their values. i really don't know. i do agree that it is a guessing game, but there should be something. help me out here. thanks.

  • Nobody knows man. Take your Kobe Bryant Chrome. Yea if he keeps on going at this pace (how many more rings) sure his cards will go up. But what if there's a freak accident or something? Who can predict what's going to happen in the future. Best thing to do is collect what you like, at least then if it goes down you have something that you enjoyed collecting and the loss won't be as bad.

  • the problem is that i bought a griffey 89 upper deck rookie for $95 when it bv at $125 and when griffey was still in a mariners uniform and payed $100 for another one when it bv at $150. the card shot to $175. man was i happy. but now its worth like $60 to $80, and the best i can get is like $40 for each one. i don't want to have another huge loss.

  • I'd invest in players who are underpriced and on GOOD TEAMS

  • I think if you are going to collect modern cards, it's going to have to be the cards that have a low production run (serial numbered to low amounts etc)

As for cards that are a solid investment, high grade vintage cards. There simply isn't enough of that stuff to go around so they will always increase. There prices may not skyrocket like modern stuff but if you can wait on your investment, you can't go wrong with vintage cards. My pick is Hank Aaron. With Bonds catching up to the record, his name will be mentioned alot and people will realize how great Hank was.

It seems you are buying when everyone else is IE Bonds in '01, Sosa and McGwire in '98. Try the lesser known players with potential so your loss won't be great. Try Micheal Olowakandi rookies or a double A player from your favorite team. But you can't go wrong with vintage Jackie Robinson can't go into a slump like Griffey and Roberto Clemente won't demand a trade. I recomend buying players you are a fan of so if the values don't rise you still have a collection to be proud of.
    Collect Ozzie Guillen Cards
    Unique Chicago Cards
    Wrestling Cards
  • that's a good idea, mint vintage (very few) over low numbered modern cards. that is true, there will be many low numbered cards in the future, but not many mint vintage.

also, what would you guys/gals think is the number one card i should buy that will go up (not too much cash though)?

puting your money in the bank is probably a safer investment. Ask all the "Investors" in cases of late 80's & 90's baseball cards. Truth be told most of my childhood collection is worth pennies on the dollar of what I paid for it, But to me its priceless.

  • My advice would be to collect what you like. The problem I've found with investing in cards is that a player like Bernie Williams' rookie cards are only worth a couple bucks, but a Bowman Chrome Delvis Santos RC is worth 10$. I know there are thousands of Williams' rookie cards and a lesser quantity of Santos and that's part of it, but come on. You have to be able to predict how a guy who you've never heard of and a guy who hasn't proven himself at all yet will play.
I don't collect much vintage, but that would probably be the best way to invest. The only direction they can go is up unless they pull an O.J. Simpson. Good luck.
I'm looking for anything Yanks, any baseball autos, and much much more on my site. Thanks.

The problem is, if you were doing it for investment, you held on to it too long. People tend to want hot stuff when it is hot, but want to ditch it when it's cold. That separates the people who are making a killing from the people always coming up short. So, when a card is HOT, that's when you sell, not buy. McGwire RCs for example. As soon as he broke the record, I would have been selling like crazy if I had any. When the prices drop, then I would buy one to have for my personal collection. The extra money would help you to get other things for your collection.

vintage is always great because they are hard to find in great shape, plus since they are retired, stats no longer effect them.
  • You and airjordan22 must be having a contest to see who can put up the most asinine post.

Think to yourself....if I knew what cards were going to go up soon, why in God's name would I tell you...or anybody for that matter?

High-grade rookies of next year's Baseball HOF inductees will go up. They do every year. The catch is that you need to figure out now who that will be.

Open a Roth IRA (can put up to $3000.00 a year). Interest will compound and you pay taxes up front...so this will end up making tax free money until you are eligible to withdrawal for retirement. Most people waste their money chasing for a "homerun".
  • Any Nick Johnson rookie cards. He was getting better each and every day until he sprained his wrist. Spraining his wrist is not a big deal, so it is not career threatening. I just bought a 1999 Bowman's
Best Nick Johnson refractor graded PSA 9 on ebay. For only $26. Buy nick johnson, or at least that is what I would do. But don't buy too much, just like 3 or 4 top of the line rookie cards like Bowman Chrome, and Refractor rookie cards of Nick Johnson.

Maybe it's just me, but I hate those numbered cards. Yeah, it rocks when you pull a rookie #'ed to 500, until you find out 10-20 other sets have the same #'ed rookie. I don't think anyone(unless you have money to burn) should invest in cards. It doesn't make any sense, yeah Kobe is great, but like someone else said, if his career ended tommorow, you'd have another Bo Jackson on your hands. No one can predict who is going to have a huge season(who would've thought Preist Holmes would rush for that many yards??), or who is going to dissapoint(Warren Sapp) or have season season ending injury(Edgerrin James). I collect what I like, Topps rookies from 1980-current and other base Topps rookies for players I really like(ie: Finest and Chrome). I don't expect any of my cards to go up, so if they do, its a pleasent suprise. If they don't, I don't really care.

If your gonna invest(which you hopefully won't) go with vintage from guys like:
    Babe Ruth
    Mickey Mantle
    Hank Aaron
    Ted Williams
These guys will always be remembered, for there greatness. Thats why collectors will always buy stuff of theres, thus retaining or raising there values in the future as there origanal vintage products become rarer and rarer to find in good condition.

    But thats just me.

Problem with that is, you're not guarenteed tomorrow. So, some short term investments are always nice image
  • Just collect what you like and don't worry about BV's. I collect Francis stuff, and could care less if his cards go down (which they've done twice in the last 5 months), it just means i can give up less to get his cards in trade. Just find something that you like so much that you don't care how much you can get for it on eBay. That way, you'll always win

We are 2 Cal Ripken Nuts & have hundreds of his base cards, inserts
cards both numbered & not, some of his GU stuff & a few of each of his RCs which we always try to add to when we can.
We don't worry too much about BV except for when we are bidding.
When we find a nice insert of his we don't have,we either trade for it or bid on it.They are all priceless to us.
The nicest Cal Ripken card we have is the one we just got;the one we got last week, last month,etc..............WOW,we love this hobby! !

  • If you wana make money buy auots of legends who are about to die. Keep up with there health, when you hear that Hank Aaron was admitted to the local hospital for chest pains, go buy some nice autos and keep a close watch and when he takes a turn fo the worse go to ebay and make it 10 days and you will have the auction everyone looks at and get the most money. You can easily make 3X-10X what you paid.

Please dont PM me about how immoral this is.

I agree. The best way to invest is to put it into something that is guaranteed. I've got a Roth IRA that will look really good when it's time for me to retire.

If I had to choose cards for a profit I'd go with Vintage. I think all Vintage cards will only go up with the supply never meeting the demand. If you collect to make money you're really barking up the wrong tree. You will put in much much more money then you will get back when ever you decide to sell. Collect for fun and don't get so wrapped up in what Beckett says about your "insert star player here" rookie card(s).

  • thanks y'all. summary of this, there is no way to figure out what may or may not increase in value in the future. buy and sell at certain times. most of all, collect cards for the fun of it, not mainly for the money. thanks y'all for all your replies. image

  • If i wanted to but a sportscard for an investment (which i would not do -i'd buy it for fun & hobby ) i would buy people who have had a major impact on the game. I would buy vintage cards as they cannot make any more and and let time work for you. I currently own;
I would also buy these graded PSA 8 if i could afford it, if not i would to to 7 which in a few years will be the hot grade as all the 8s are being snapped up.

    Jackie Robinson rookie card
    Roberto Clemente rookie
    Shoeless Joe jackson ( id buy his E-90 i believe it is -i have a W-574 )

These guys are not going away ever
