Have you ever owned 1/2 of a coin?

Many forum members will remember the outrageous money that I paid for an outrageously toned 1982 PR69 Washington Commem sold on ebay by Supercoin.

Well, I didn't own it but for a day or so before Adrian (Anaconda) paid me an even more outrageous price at the TNA in Ft. Worth. Adrian ran an auction or two on ebay but the coin didn't meet his reserve.

While at the ANA, I was talking to Jack Beymer of Santa Rosa, CA and he just couldn't stop talking about the coin. Jack said it was the prettiest coin he'd ever seen. I told him that at the time Adrian was running an auction on the piece but I was waiting for him to run it again without reserve so I could buy back at a better price than what he'd paid for it.

Jack suggested that he and I buy the coin and 'split' it! I like Jack and although I'd never done a single transaction with him, I decided, what the heck. To make a long story short, he and I now own the coin. Adrian sent it to me and I sent it to Jack who does more shows than I. Hopefully he'll display it at every show because it's worth seeing.

What I don't know now is how we 'share' the coin. Should I keep it half the year and let him have it the other half? How about even months versus odd months? Suggestions?

Let whoever has the best way to store it keep it.
Usually such a deal is made with the intention of either one selling their half to the other or selling it to a third party and spliting the profit.

Buy it together than flip it to see who wins (pick tails).

  • well first find a good vice and put cloth on it so not to damage the coin when tightening it on the coin then take a really sharp saw zaw with a metal cutting blade and cut it in half being very careful to catch all the metal shaveings then you each have slightly under half the coin to hold when you sell it send both parts along with the metal shaveings to the new owner

I hope that helps with you problem

Crack it out of the slab before flipping it. The slab might weigh more on one side than the other. We want the flip to be fair.

Just make sure both of you have a written document explaining that it is jointly owned. The document should also provide for the disposition of the coin if something happens to one of you (i.e. the remaining partner becomes sole owner, or alternatively, may become sole owner by buying the other half for a fixed amount of money).

I don't know if I owned half a coin coin but I must have owned only part of a coin because before the dealer made a real lowball offer on a pristine MS66 1936 Washington quarter he said he "didn't think it was all there." I told him I really didn't know where the rest of it was or who had it but if I found it I would come back. image
Buy the coin...but be sure to pay for it.

This story reminds me of that Cracked CC Morgan Dollar owned by "Broken CC" coin dealer. They posted it here about a month ago. Somehow, though, I don't think GSA's Washington Com. will fetch nearly as much!! Even after splitting it in two.

Good one Supercoin! Btw I own a Jefferson clipped planchet (40%) so I think that qualifies. I tried to get it half price, the dealer just laughed.

Greg- that's why I said pick tails. In the PCGS holder the slab/coin will land 51% of the time on the reverse (tails). Recently the Federal Government spent 5.5 million on a grant studying this issue and came up with that scientific evidence.

Yep, both sides look great. I think you'll enjoyed whichever half you end up with. image

I think King Solomon has already solved your problem, cut the coin in half. Bearimage
