One more minor PCGS irritant....

RussRuss Posts: 48,514 ✭✭✭
Just got the results of another submission, and they combined four of the five coins on line #1. I deliberately had them on seperate lines because I made notes on what I thought each would grade. Now, I don't know which is which. In the past, they've always posted the results based on the line entry, even with like coins.

Is this a new policy? Happen to anybody else recently?

Russ - Thats more than a minor irritation. I like to keep notes on my coins also and I would be really Pi$$edif that happened to me. Have you contacted PCGS to find out about this change in procedure. Please let us all know when you get an answer. Bear

  • I split my coins up for the same reason. This is the first I have heard about PCGS combining "like " coins together, and not keeping them on the lines as I have sent them in on.

I hope this was just a minor mistake, and not the new current policy.

I am sorry that this happened to you. Thank you for shedding some light it, so hopefully it won't anymore.

I am looking for any PCGS MS 70 Silver Eagle.

I dropped a PM to Charlie to see if this is a change. Hoping it's not.

  • Next time scratch your predicted grade right on the coin, no possibility of it getting mixed up.

    Supercoin,

Ironic that you should drop in. I was particularly antsy about this submission because it is one of three I have in where, for the first time, I submitted with no polybags, just the Saflips. Remember I was still occasionally having hazing problems even with Saflips, but thought it might be the bags.

Depending on the actual order of the coins, I'm either way off on a couple, and dead on with the other two, which might be haze. Or, I'm 1 point off on each of the four, which could just be opinion. The fifth, an Accented Hair, actually came back a point higher then my notes indicate.

Yesterday, I had a three coin submission post where two graded a point higher then I thought, and the other was spot-on. Saw that and thought, all right, hazing problem must be solved! Then today's result has me wondering again. Have to wait for the coins and see.

I have one more submission I'm waiting on. I hope they don't combine lines on it also.

Aagh! What did you do that for!! image

Did you also put the recommended $1 bill in the opposite side of each flip?

Good luck with 'em, will be curious to know how they turn out haze-wise.

I've always just listed like coins on the same line, but then I label the flips with the invoice number, then Line 1-1, Line 1-2, Line 1-3. Never had a problem with losing track of which coin is which.

When I want to keep like coins separate, I've always put them on different lines but always put a couple of other items between them so they wouldn't even be adjacent. I've never had them combined doing it that way.

    Supercoin,

Some schnoz recommended I try it that way.image

    Wayne,

That's actually an excellent idea. Problem is that I'd have to start submitting something besides proof 1964 Kennedy's.image

$1!!?? No wonder you`re getting the fingerprints!

Should be 10%, with a $5 minimum in each flip!image
A dealer once asked me if I noticed any three-legged buffalos on the bourse,to which I replied,"...no,but I saw alot of two-legged jackasses..."

easy way to solve the problem. put a series of dots on the edge of each coin, cross-ref to a written index. it obviously will not affect thr grade. also a great solution to ensure coins don't get "switched" during transactions.

  • russ, strange you should mention the saflips. after 1 week in saflips my proof quarters are so hazed you cant tell they are proofs. in mylar --no problem. i did this to prove to myself that the oily stuff in saflips will destroy a coin. it did. i used quarters because i dont really care about them and they are left over from kennedy submission proof sets. now if you dry the oil out of saflips first they dont haze the coins. i am the only one who believes this but i have learned my lesson. saflips destroy proof coins. period.

Just got off the phone with Charlie on this issue. Side note: he called me, didn't have to bug him to get him on it.

This isn't some kind of policy change, just the actions of the receiver. The same thing was done on another submission I have in right now that's still in process. He's in touch with the operations manager about it, and according to what he says, even though they show the same line they are still in the correct order.

Now, if that's the case, I have two that are a point low, one that is two points low (I'll be taking a VERY close look at that one), one that is spot-on and the last a point higher.

That is in direct contradiction to the experience of myself and others. It makes me wonder if you were actually sold SAFLIP brand flips or some other "lookalike".

Or perhaps you removed some coins from a sealed set and the simple exposure to the air was what caused your problems, not the flips?

SAFLIPs are the best on the market, in my experience. I'd hate to see someone use a lesser flip based on misinformation.

And no, I don't have any financial interest in promoting them, just hate to see good coins ruined by bad flips. image

    Supercoin,

Once I have all three of my current submissions back in hand, I'll update you on the hazing issue. One indicates no problem developed, one indicates there "may" be a problem, and the third hasn't yet posted.

  • these are saflip holders from unopened packs and are genuine. like i have said before there is an oily substance in them that can be wiped out with a tissue. once the oil is out they no longer haze the coin. i lost big time on a beautiful ike that hazed in a saflip. i think i will try dipping it to see if i can restore it. my experiment over the last couple of weeks completly contradicts the use of saflips for proof coins. beyond all doubt. the soft plastic flips have had no visible effect on the coins. the quarters were from four different proof sets.

    Really?

I had an entire submission that came back looking like the above. All were in soft plastic flips.

  • presleyh, in that case I would suggest you contact the manufacturer, E&T Kointainer. Last I talked with them the owner was pretty passionate about coin conservation and I think they'd be eager to get a sample of your bad flips and do what they can to resolve your concerns.

I've kept Ike proofs in SAFLIPs for years without the problems you're experiencing.
  • matbe we should wrap them in toilet paper or better yet duct tape. i really dont know how to send coins in without screwing them up. i would love to contact kointainer, the pack has an address but no phone number. i can probably get off the net. that is a good idea.
