Flag Inserts

How do some state quarters get the flag inserts and others get the regular insert?

I gather, from reading one of Wondercoin's comments, you must submit a whole batch of State quarters as PCGS only prints these out in sheets (is it 200 per sheet?).
Anything less than the minimum won't qualify.

  • My guess is that you approach PCGS and contact to submit a VERY large number of coins and pay PCGS a large fee and you can get whatever you want on the labels and no one else will be able to get that on their labels. (really want to know for sure? Ask Les Fox the dealer who keeps putting out all those different signature series PCGS slabs.) I'm fairly sure that all of these state flag labeled slabs were done for one company who then jobbed them out to others. When these first started appearing on eBay they were only as individal pieces or the occaisional year set in proof. The only place that had them in full sets and both proofs and uncs was DHRC in an ad they had in Coin World. Since then individual year sets in MS have begun showing up on ebay as well.

I recently received a flyer from DHRC offering the quarters and/or sets of quarters in PR69DCAM or something with the flags. Actually, I think they look real nice but I'm not about to pay the money they want just for a look. I've found my expectations for that grade are too high - they don't appear much different than the set I got for $31.95 from the mint.

Get with the times, Gilbert! If you use a 400x microscope the difference is as clear as night and day. image

Pat: I am told it is 100 on a sheet. The reason PCGS can not sell a couple flags is that they need to run a special sheet of 100 flags per coin type per order (i.e. serial numbers require use only with the particular order I am told). PCGS charges $2/coin extra for the flag insert. I offer the flag inserts generally either for the same price as non-flag inserts or for $2/coin extra, depending upon my cost.

I have never submitted a coin to PCGS myself seeking a flag insert (yet), but for $2/coin (say on a MS68 or MS69 coin), it is really no big deal, one way or the other. Some people do love the flag holders.
