there were at least a half dozen different magazines on quilting, a handful on Guns, a magazine on nearly everything you could imagine EXCEPT COINS. A humbling experience. image

I used to have to cross the state line into FLA to get my coin rags from Booksamilion and they only had CoinAge & Coin World.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

A few months ago I was in a magazine store and they had a whole rack dedicated to body piercing and tattooing. Several racks were dedicated to *imported* porn. They had at least two full racks of gardening mags. I found 1 coin mag. It was Coins. image

But seriously, I have wondered the same thing -- I've seen magazine racks with literally hundreds of hobby magazines, some exceedingly obscure, and none on coins. Purely in terms of the number of hobbyists, this doesn't make sense. What is the explanation?

If you guys are worried about no magazines due to the lack of popularity of coins here is a different perspective. Seems every time I channel surf Home Shopping Network is selling coins. If they weren't popular and if people weren't buying them it wouldn't be on. Don't see any quilting shows. Too bad, eh?

Went to a web site advertising 1200 magazines; in "our" category they listed Coin Prices, Coin World, CoinAge and Coins. They also carried Numismatic and World Coin News. So even if your news stand carried 1,000 magazines you would only have a couple of choices. Now I have to go back and find out what Click is all about.

The states quarters have given us a unique opportunity to grow this hobby
back to where it was in years past. We may never again get to where we
were in 1964 when there were millions of collectors, but we can surely gain
enough collectors to support another magazine or two. Eventually most of
buyers of the coins on TV and the casual SQ collectors will walk into a coin
shop or pick up a coin paper. What are we going to tell the people who've
lost some money on their purchases? How are we going to come across to
the 14 year old picking coins out of circulation? Are we going to be friendly
and inviting or are we going to be condescending and insulting?

"Where it was years ago" ... according to a recent CoinWorld editorial the number of collectors hasn't changed much in the last 30 years or so. This is based on subscribers to the major numismatic publications (CW, Numismatic News, Coinage and ANA membership). Although the Mint has a database of collectors that numbers in the millions (probably containing many duplicates and occassional buyers) the number of avid collectors is estimated to be a small percentage of that number.

There are still a few places in town where you can get a coin magazine or two. I think most who want them subscribe instead of buy retail. I have noticed that the retail shoppers mosty look through the coin magazines to see what a hand-me-down or keepsake coin is worth, dog ear the pages and then don't buy the magazine.
Buy the coin...but be sure to pay for it.
