Are most 82cc morgans weakly Struck?

stmanstman Posts: 11,352 ✭✭✭✭✭
Most of these that I see seem to be weak on the strike.

Or at least in the gsa series that I collect. Even the scans posted to this board that I've seen, seem to be weakly struck. Any comments would be appreciated.

The 1882-CC generally comes with a good strike IMO as do all of the common date CCs with the exception of the 80-CC. Once in a while they come with a slightly weak strike but the majority of them are above average to well struck. Sometimes scans or pics can also make a Morgan appear to be weakly struck over the ear and breast feathers when it really isn't.

Dragon, thats where I'm seeing it over ear and breast feathers. But for some reason I'm seeing it more on the 82.

    Steve,

I agree with Dragon. The 80-CC is by far the date you'll encounter with the weakest strike. Some of them have hardly any detail at all immediately above the ear.

While many of the GSA common date coins are not struck sharply, I guess I'd use the term 'soft' as opposed to weak. I know, what's the difference? Check out the average 80-CC and you'll see what I mean.

    stman,

Keep looking, a fully struck 82-CC is not a hard coin to find. Also, remember what I said, sometimes the pics make them look weakly struck over the ear when they are not.

Most of the ones you see that are weak is because you are seeing is the leftover picked through culls after the nice ones have been slabbed or stashed away in collections. The 82-CC is readily available nice but like other nice Morgans they are getting tougher to find.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

Dog97, Agreed thanks for the input. And I've heard you mention this before concerning cc morgans, dmpl , etc.

Please keep in mind, die state and die maintenance also play a role in what a coin is supposed to look like.

Softly struck and weaklu struck coins should have other telltale signs, such as striations and sometimes a roughness to the surface that go hand and hand with weaker strikes. Sometimes, if a coin lacks detail and there are no other telltale signs, it very well could be a poorly maintained die, a few hundred to thousand more strikes per die above recommendation or the coin is struck as well as it could be from the die used.
