On a real one (strong reverse), the L in Liberty touches the rim, TRUST is stronger than the rest of the motto, and the second 2 in the date is sharper than the first.

So, an couple of questions about this eBay fraud:
#1 How do any of you know it's altered?
#2 What caused the genuine model to be missing the D?
#3 If this is an altered original 22-D how was it altered?
#4 What does the die crack through the O on the rev mean as far as a diagonistic?
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
  • ok if you get this cent by the die crack through the O that would make this a real 1922D no D cent . This is a very good way to see if it a real cent and not an altered cent. By no means is this the only way to tell if its a real 1922D no D cent.

The dies used for this if anybody wants to know is the 1 and 3 die for the obverse.

    1. i dont know how you can tell if its altered. i guess you could see the tooling marks under magnifaction.
2.the real 1922D no D is caused by over use of the dies for the obverse . the denver mint asked for more dies but philadelphia said they had now more dies so denver used the old dies they had on hand. as a result of oil dirt and using very worn dies the incused D area was filled with gunk and the no D occured. this wasent a constant thig it would fill and then fall out only to refill so there were gaps in the no D being made in the final 500,000 made
3.In my opnion its not altered but im not an expert.
    4. and the die crask is something that can be found on the real deal 1922D no D

The second "2" should be much weaker than this one is.

That's on the weak reverse variety, according to my handout from Desert Coast Coins.

clw54- I believe it is weak on both, just weaker on the 'weak reverse' variety.

Just found something. According to this website, the die crack through the O shows it's from Die Pair #1, one of the combinations which makes it the weak reverse variety. This is the less valuable variety. The strong reverse is the one that's most in demand.

  • Don't forget also, that the 22D Plain is one of the most dinked around Lincoln's along with the 1909-S VDB and the 1914-D. For the money that you're going to spend on one of these - either you hold it in your hand and you know what you're doing or you get a slabbed one.

    In my humble opinion.

i am not THE expert, but believe this is the "very weak D", isn't it? if so, it's a legit die state to collect. NOT a "plain", though. as someone said, a couple of diagnostics are missing.

On my monitor it looks like the MM was removed.I see a circular area below the date. For what its worth a filled die is common and does not command a high premium IMHO.
