Seated collectors. give me your opinions on grade, etc..

I won this the other day.

It looks to me like a very respectable coin exc. for that one mark on the rev. I liked the look of it for my son's "type" set.

what do you think on grade? price? I think I paid right around greysheet bid for a Fine for it.

thanks!

I'd say FINE according to the A.N.A grading guidelines but I don't know anything about the price. That "mark" on the eagle looks like many of the marks i've seen on coins that were attempted to have holes drilled through them but that location doesn't lead me to belive it's a drill mark since it's not in a "jewelery" position.

    nice john...

I sent Dick Osburn an 1853-O ddr to attribute for me. Maybe only one in existance
or maybe just longacreing...Theres 4 attributed, all p mint that have ddo...none
known in ddr...so im hoping I found a new variety...bought it as a joke on ebay
for 42 bucks, found doubling by mistake....looks real cool, like someone built a smaller image over a few big ones..

can someone explain the term "LONGACREING"???

I'd say a solid fine, maybe even fine+ details. That mark on the reverse, aside.

    Goose,

That coin will probably grade F15. Looks nice and original, and the price you paid is reasonable given that it's highly sought-after for type purposes. (It's actually very common!)

Probably a VF on actual wear but downgraded a step for the reverse "damage." I've seen some varieties of this date that are fairly weak in the centers but have strong detail otherwise. Just sold an original NGC AU-53 with about 75% luster. It was downgraded due to the weaker central striking...esp. evident on Miss Liberty's upper gown and right upper leg.

The mark may be a test-mark. Since lots of counterfeits were floating around back then, people scratched X's or punched little dents on coins to see if they were plated (kind of like on Harold's 1795 dollar image).

borderline VF, but the mark nets the grade to a SOLID F-12.
