Would You Bid On coin If Seller Didn't Answer Question?

stmanstman Posts: 11,352 ✭✭✭✭✭
There is a coin I WAS very interested in. It is not cheap so I used the ask seller a question feature. I asked one important question for me.

I asked does this coin have nice luster & color to it, not meaning toning, but the color of coin. No response and the first no response
that has happened. So I'm not going to bid on coin. Curious what some here would do. Thanks in advance for any replies. Allmost a week has gone by.

    STMAN,

It would depend. For instance, does the seller offer a no-questions-asked privilege? If he does, your risk is low.

If the auction is about to end, the guy may not have time to respond. If you write during the weekend, it may be that the guy is on the road or otherwise not able to respond. I know that some sellers will post auctions and then take off for a week or so. While that doesn't help out guys who wish to have questions answered, it's one of the good things about ebay. You can post the auction and let it run its course.

In your particular case, if you're not comfortable, then it's best not to bid without having your question answered.

gsaguy, thanks I took all you mentioned into consideration before I asked you folks.

But I have to look at it if they are not available for a question a week later, than what happens when it's time to ship? In other words I asked the question a week ago. So you are right I don't feel comfortable and I will pass on this coin. I've learned to allways go with gut feeling.

  • Absolutely not!

If they can't bother to answer your question you can bet they won't bother to play fair once they have your dirty little money in their hands.
  • They could be on vacation, have not received the message, etc.

I have filters on my email reader and every once in a while i peek to see what is getting deleted, one time i found 3 emails i wanted to read.
  • If i wanted the coin why not?Answer or no answer if i want it ,i bid on it.---rotts

stman- if you really want to know what the SELLER thinks, I would suggest that you ask one more time, in case, for some reason, he missed your email. That said, you are setting yourself up for problems when you ask an unknown seller about the attributes of a coin that he is trying to sell.

As a rule, I will not bid on any item if the seller doesn't take the time to answer my question.

I don't wait til the last day to ask questions so I give them ample time to see my message and respond.

If the seller does not respond, the most likely explanation by far is that he knows an honest answer will discourage you from bidding, and he doesn't want to put a lie in writing. Indeed, he's probably hoping that you might think he is unavailable and bid anyway. In my judgment, this would be a big mistake, even with a return priviledge, unless his feedback indicates no problems whatsoever with returning an unsatisfactory item.

No. If I get an email later explaining their not getting to me in time then I'll just try to catch their next auction that interests me. image

  • Nope--I've been in the same boat and never bid. I may have lost a few nice coins, but more than likely I didn't waste money on junk.

Just to explain a little more, Some have said I'm setting my self up for problems. I don't agree with this.

For example I asked the same question on another coin and differant seller, they got back with me right away. they also mentioned a mark on coin I couldn't see in scan. So I think asking a question like this sometimes can help. Providing the person is honest. I bought this coin. It arrived yesterday and I'm happy with it. I appreciate everyones input. All we can do sometimes is find out what we can then make a decision .

Nope!! Obviously, you asked a question that would help in determining if you want to buy the coin. They didnt get back to you for whatever reason. If this information wasnt useful to you, you never would have asked the question in the first place and you have bid. So, would you have bid had you not asked the question? If a seller is a) too busy to get back to you or b) not available to answer the question, that is not for you to figure out. SELLER's LOSS. if you are going to list coins for sale, be available to answer questions and if you are going to be away while the auction is running, state so in the auction and save everyone the time and aggravation.

HAVE A GREAT DAY! THE CHOICE IS YOURS!!!!
  • Nope. I get irritated enough when they don't answer their emails at the end of auctions, certainly I wouldn't bid on the coin during the auction... unless it's graded by PCGS.

A lot of people are email idiots and lose them or their email servers lose them so I would ask again. I've even had well respected members of this board not answer my first email and I'm glad that I sent them a second email which they answered and everything turned out just fine. image

Well since auctions last a little longer and end on tues and wed. I'm going to give it another shot at emailing them. I think auction ends tues. Not a big deal. If I would have tried again too soon than they might have thought I'm not a patient type of guy.

  • I wouldn't bid on it. After the auction ends and you get the coin you may not be happy with it. If they had a clearly marked return policy, then I might take a chance as they could be out of town or something.
  • With all the threads I've seen about accurate pictures/scans, it's very inportant for a seller of coins to be available to answer questions. This said, it could be an e-mail problem, as happens all too often.
Remember with ebay - patience. Bob

Well, thought I would update this. I emailed seller once again. Gave them option to reply. Early sunday evening I mentioned that maybe my email got lost in shuffle. Honestly I didn't think so.

They replied within the hour and were so glad I tried again, as they had lost my other one. Said the coin is in desk and will get back with me in a bit honest!! with a smile.

That was 6.00 p.m. Haven't heard since. My gut feeling said they did not lose my 1st email. And I don't beg anybody to take my money. Now it's kind of funny.

I don't care if they have an excuse that they had to Take Their Chicken To The Vet, I wouldn't bid in any of their auctions.

Like I said before, If I won, what would I go through when it's time for them to ship.

  • You did right in not bidding. This can be a big red flag, so why stick your neck out. I never bid on any auction if I don't get a clear concise answer to my question(s).

Last May my wife and I went to Mexico for our 10 year anniversary and I ran some 10 day auctions. I said right in the description I would be out of town but would answer questions before the auction ended. Had one guy who was a regular customer send me about 15 emails wondering why I wasn't answering him. He took it very personal and wanted to know how he insulted me. He even said something about it in his feedback to me for a coin he bought a week before. After we worked it out we laughed about it. Totally different situation with this person but thought I'd share anyway.
