  • Ok, this thread brings up one of my greatest fears: Uncertified coins.

Frequently there is a nice coin which looks MS63+ on eBay and its way less than the price of the corresponding cert.

However, I'll frequently go somewhere else.

My thinking is: If the cert is worth $100 more why is this guy selling the raw?

Who wouldn't certify a coin to make an instant $60-80 (after grading fees)?

This is a primo example of where somebody, probably like me image, will buy this coin thinking "boo-yah I just purchased a rainbow for 1/3 normal price" and then find out that this guy has taken a blow torch to it and even ACG has a tough time certifying it.

  • Hey, he'll refund your purchase cost PLUS $20 if you're not satisfied! I wonder if you can buy them in bulk.
  • Trying to sell this kind of crap is what gives the hobby a black eye.

uh, i guess thats because AT coins are never certified???

<< <i>Who wouldn't certify a coin to make an instant $60-80 (after grading fees)? >>

maybe those who've LOST $60-80 AFTER certifying coins?

not trying to be sour on this , but the idea that plastic protects 100% you from artful toning is ludicrous. same old story here, if you buy it sight unseen, regardls of what holder its in, your risking your a$$.

oh, and the ones you pic'd on ebay are blatantly artificial, done with heat.

This person has been a great buyer in the past of rainbow coins. He is learning and it looks like his learning curve on AT’ed coins just became expensive. Instead of flaming him, I just invited him to the forum to learn why these coins are AT’ed.

It is our responsibility to help our hobby / profession by educating new collector / dealers instead of flogging them. If they continue with questionable sales etc. then it’s a matter of ethics but we tried.

The coins must be beautiful in person or he would not have backed it with a full return and extra cash. It’s a shame that the coins are heat AT’ed.

    IMO,

  • I like the guy that spent $200 on one of the dimes from the last round of auctions. Maybe he is just going for the $20 return, I don't know. My pity level for ebay buyers with more money than common sense is dropping.

I'm sorry, but I cannot accept your concept that it is our responsibility to "educate dealers," particularly, when it is for the purpose of enhancing their sales. The education is supposed to come before the dealing/selling.

<< <i>But ask him if he'd like to look at some awesome super orignal coins and he's not interested because he can get the same for less in ACG slabs. Yeah, best of luck. Don't call me when you need to sell your coins >>

LOL. That is almost exactly like a story Dave Bowers gave in his book "Buyer's Guide to the Rare Coin Market". ACG wasn't involved but it had to do with "cherry picking" coins and the price you have to pay. I guess this kind of thing happens all the time.

simple answer, tell him to get em slabed, and you'll pay his asking price plus cost of cert. something tells me it won't happen.

Sorry Tonekiller I just don't agree with you on this and it is because of this statement he makes...

<< <i><< FIRST THINGS FIRST - THIS COIN (AND 3 OTHER 1963 PROOFS I HAVE UP FOR AUCTION) IS NATURALLY TONED! I COULDN'T BELIEVE IT MYSELF WHEN I FOUND THEM BUT ITS TRUE! >>

He is making a unaquivicle (sp) statement. Not saying, gee uh sure it looks wild and AT but I bought them like this and my opinion is they are real...that is quite different from what he is saying.

Take a good photo and open the bidding at $.99...see what the coins bring with no reserve?

Morris has an excellent point. I was ready to agree with TBT, but the fact is that the guy did state unequivocally that they are naturally toned. To my way of thinking, a proclamation of that certitude negates any obligation the collecting community might have to help him out.

  • OK, my opinion (not from the experts, like you guys): Those coins are AT'd. Bottom line. Buyer beware. If they were not, they would be slabbed.image

Yikes, poor guy spent $100 buck on that at crap...he should have known when only the silver is toned. Someone should give him some vaseline.

Although I don't want to make this comparison, as it isn't on the same level, by any means, but it's all I can think of at the moment. This guy is like an abuse victim. He gets abused, and later on he's abusing others. Better give him some handi-paks of vaseline.......one for each buyer. This guy's a crook.
