Watch out for this dealer on EBAY!

I recently procured this coin on EBAY:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1371579959&r=0&t=0&showTutorial=0&ed=1028758785&indexURL=0&rd=1

It is an attractive coin, but the photo was either doctored to favor a super "Orange Monster" look, or he is adept at tricky enhancement photography. I'd vote for the former. Bottom line, an OK gold (somewhat orange) Morgan, but not nearly as nice as advertised.

The dealer is: bondnote (lillyswings@yahoo.com). The guy was rude when confronted and did NOT allow for a return. Funny that he 1st brought up the word "doctored photo" in our email correspondence and not me!

He's now on my "do not bid" list. Buyer beware!

  • It's really important when bidding on ebay to check for a stated return policy. If none is stated, write and ask before bidding. If you don't hear back before the auction is over, or the seller says no returns, do not bid under any circumstance.

I don't think the scan has been doctored. You can snag the pict, click a quick fix on it and if there is a drastic change you can count on it being tweaked. Scanners have a tendency to make toning darker. I bet rather than being deep reddish orange like the scan shows it's more lighter translucent orange. I wasn't going to bid but I was watching it several weeks ago because I surfed across it and thought it was pretty. Can you post a pict of what it really looks like?

It'll be interesting to see if the seller pops you with a retaliatory negative. That tells me a lot about sellers when they do that. A suggestion if he does. Your followup to it should be a simple "Retaliatory negatives are childish." No caps, no yelling.

  • Thanks Russ! He actually threatened to drop a negative on me (but he forgot that he already left me positive feedback!).

And I quoth: "Praise : Super fast payment. Pleasure doing business with. A+"

If only the pleasure was mutual!

Excellent!image I hate sellers who retaliate. My one and only negative happened that way.

I second Tonelover's comment in that $125 isn't too much of an educational fee in order to learn to only bid from those with a stated return policy.

I guess what surprises me about the scan is that the color of the PCGS insert looks about right. Go figure.

I noticed you used Ebay's "Buy It Now" feature. Prior to placing your bid, did you take the time to inquire about the seller's position regarding a return privilege? If not, why not???? It seems to be very important to you, as you mentioned it in your Negative Feedback. You say, "It is an attractive coin", yet you submit Negative Feedback!??? I'm pretty sure that seller didn't reach through the phone lines, grab you by the neck and threaten you with bodily harm if you didn't use the BIT to purchase that coin! You find the coin "attractive", it is the very coin pictured in the auction and he provided very fast delivery (auction ended on 8/7 and you submitted Feedback on 8/15). I can see a Neutral Feedback, however the seller clearly didn't deserve a Negative. In the future, if you feel a return privilege is important, then you should take the time to discuss the seller's position on returns, prior to placing our bid. Personally, I would not hesitate to purchase a coin from that dealer. I'm with Dog, I think you owe the Members a phono/scan of the coin, so we can more accurately assess who was at fault here.
  • DCAMFranklin--I don't have a digital camera or scanner to post the image. If you want to buy stuff from this guy please do. I posted my message as a public service. Frankly, you can take it or leave it!

As a guy who likes toned coins, I have appreciated other members posts on ebay sellers who doctor photos and should be avoided.

    Out.

byergo, I always appreciate any information that will help me avoid pitfalls, but
in this case I think more info is required to determine if the seller really did anything unethical.

From your post I gather that you have not posted pictures or scans of coins before.
As many will tell you, the picture or the scan does not always look like the coin in person.
I don't have enough info to agree with you that the picture was doctored and at this point I do not feel that it is correct to accuse the seller as such without further info.
An additional pic or scan of the coin in question would truly be necessary to make that determination. While there are many scammers on e-bay, sometimes I feel that some board members are to quick to accuse without all the facts.

And as stated in other replies, this is a good learning experience on what to look for when buying on e-bay (return policy).

cointagious brings up a good point and a practice that I use quite often. Just plain old research to see if the piece has been on the block before. That's about how hard my wallet took it to learn the scan game.

Ah-ha! the seller didn't even use his own picture.
Thanks for posting your picture byergo. It looks nothing like the scan on eBay. I would have been dissapointed too. It looks quite a bit different than I even thought it would. It looks more dark & brown. I'm pretty sure your pict is a close representation of the coin.

The first seller says "warm glowing amber hues while very pale champagne patina is faintly evident on the reverse." Hint: when a seller says amber & champagne while refering to a toned coin he means brown & ugly. Same thing goes for "pastel colors."
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
  • The info is appriciated, and buyer be ware, but dont judg a horse by the color, the fastest horses run to water or food, and if the seller is broke or need the money, then U could be the benifactor.

so coingame2000 is also a seller to beware of?

(although in feedback bondnote loved the coin!?)

    this is very confusing.

Coingame2000 participates on this board, I believe. Maybe he will chime in about it and let us know.
  • Thats a good idea Richard, coingame 2000 should be able to shed a little light. Check outproud new member thread, sorry for interupting thread, only way I new to get morganluver's attention

  • do the numbers on the slab match up? I don't see how the colors can go from orange to brown like that, unless ?filters? were used over the lights?
