What does "mute" do?

Not really a coin topic, but ....

To the right side of each thread, there is a small gear wheel. When I click on the wheel, I notice there is a "mute" option. So I muted a thread just to see what it does. But the thread still appears in the thread list, and notifications of new posts within the thread still appear. So what exactly does "mute" do?
