Why in the hell do posts get blown away when...

cladkingcladking Posts: 28,689 ✭✭✭✭✭
..we use naughty words. Ive typed out long posts only to lose the entire
thing because I use a word like C+O+C+K+S+U+R+E or B+I+T+C+H.
If words must be edited...fine, edit away. But why edit the entire D+A+M+N
post???

This was actually intended for the open forum, but the question is
    equally relevant here.

I learned early to copy & paste when it balks at me. That way I didn't need to re-type.

I had a lengthy detailed post about toning I found in a proof set vaporize because I tried to use the term "pin pr*ck" when describing how a foreign substance may have gotten inside the packaging. Frankly, that's more then a bit ridiculous.

PS: I'd like to note for the record that I support the censoring of certain words; a couple that come to mind start with an f and a c. But, there are many words that are part of the common lexicon, and have many meanings beyond vulgarity. A bit of common sense would seem to be in order here.

I think that their censor software needs to be edited.

Well, as someone who wrote an obscenity filter at work, I want to add a few thoughts. Because the forum is open to the world, there are many people from many backgrounds that contribute thoughts and ideas. And each person has their views on the use of obscenities. For some, it is no different than any other word. For others, it is highly offensive. And while I support freedom of speech, I do not support indiscriminate speech. For example, yelling "fire!" in a crowded theatre is not protected by the first amendment. Libel and slander are two other examples of where limits are imposed on our freedom of speech.

So it is acceptable to filter out words that are likely to be used in a pejorative or derogatory manner when in a forum that is open to such a diverse group. Self restraint is one way in which we preserve our freedoms.

From a technical perspective, there are multiple approaches to obscenity filters. Most will reject the post and allow you to edit. Some will replace the words for you. Some just ignore it. Usually when a post is ignored, you can click the back button on your browser and edit the post and re-submit. It is good form to inform the user, though, that they used a word on the obscenities list and that they must edit the word before posting.

You'll never solve the problem of words that in some contexts are constructive and in other contexts are destructive. But in nearly all cases, there is an acceptable alternative phrasing for the positive context that conveys the same meaning and still avoids misunderstandings.

it is simple to get around since my username is "contains a bad word". All I do is put a bold tag with nothing in it in the middle like
sonofagunk is written as sonof[-b][-/b]agunk (with the dashes removed)

There are ways around the filter, as SOG pointed out.image

RUSS - If you are going to start requiring common sense to rule on these board, that will leave at least 75% of us out in the cold. Im also not so sure about the remaining 25% either. image Bear

I'm surprised your posts vaporize in those cases. I have, more than one time, written words that for some reason or another get flagged by the censor. However, the censor highlights those words in yellow boxes and all I do is hit "Back" to change the word and have not lost a post yet.

    Tom,

It has to do with the browser cache settings, network latency, and server response time. They don't always vanish, only when those three things combine to cause the problem when hitting the back button.

I usually copy any lengthy post before hitting the reply button, but in the above case, I spaced it.

I agree, STOCKFORD, however, certain words get flagged when most any of us would realize that there is no foul language intent behind them. Words used to write about such things as the peac*o*c*k toned Ike hoard get flagged.

  • You all may be "good" guys and not swear but unfortunately people in other forums don't have the restraint you do.
The censorship works across all the forums so one or two bad apples can ruin it for everyone.
I'll release dam n hopefully I won't have to lock it back up.
The other examples here won't be opened up and we appreciate that you DON'T use creative spelling or bold tags, etc to get around it.

Yes, point well taken. Is there no way to flag the offending word earlier
in the process, so we computer illiterates don't lose the whole thing?

    Tempus fugit.
  • I have never heard of losing the whole thing.
Can't you hit the back button and correct the text?

  • tradedollarnuttradedollarnut Posts: 20,162 ✭✭✭✭✭
No, it will not let you - you lose your post if you do that. The only thing you can do is copy and then go thru the reply again and paste. Big hassle.
  • tradedollarnuttradedollarnut Posts: 20,162 ✭✭✭✭✭
I've only had it happen once - when I went back and corrected the offending word (which wasn't bad!) and tried to post, I got an error message saying you can only post once (but no post was accepted)! Not sure if it occurred at home or work, so I don't know which browser.
  • Thanks TDN. It always helps to have more info.

I'll see if I can find anything out.

    Carol

I see what you all are talking about.
It happened to me also, I thought I did something wrong.
I'm not sure what we can do from our end, we may have to contact the people that wrote the software.

I have a Yogi-ism on the tip of my tongue, something along the lines of profanity being alsolutely unnecessary, except when it is neccessary.
